Tottenham Hotspur vs Brighton: Premier League preview

The latest manager to attempt a salvation job at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is former Marseille boss Roberto De Zerbi, whose appointment seems destined to be a stroke of genius – at least in the short-term context of what's left of the season – or a outright disaster.

They're running out of road on that front. De Zerbi has to work out as planned or Spurs will be playing in the Championship this season. He hasn't had the start he'd have wanted but the international break is in the rearview and the time to reward Spurs for bringing him in is now.

Immediate improvement is needed, and it's needed badly. Spurs dropped into the relegation zone last weekend and now "Surely they won't?" has become "They actually are!"

Spurs haven't won a Premier League match in 2026. That's 14 matches, nine of them losses, and a real mixed bag of opponents waiting for them in the run-in. De Zerbi has another six matches to get them out of trouble.

The Spurs boss will be very familiar with the next challenge his team faces. De Zerbi was Brighton's manager between 2022 and 2024, when he left by mutual consent and under just a little bit of a cloud.

Brighton couldn't be coming to town at a worse time for Spurs. The Seagulls are perched on top of the six-game Premier League form table with five wins. Only league leaders Arsenal have beaten them in that time.

Fabian Hurzeler's side built the early part of their season on good home form but are now on their best away run of the season, having beaten Brentford, Sunderland and Burnley in their last three.

In years gone by, Spurs would have been regarded as a different proposition to those three. Now, Brentford are pushing for Europe, Sunderland are safe as houses and Spurs are only one place above Burnley in the table. All they will care about now is making that two.
