Tottenham have made contact with Atletico Madrid star Conor Gallagher about a summer transfer, according to TBR Football.

The Lilywhites have made it clear that they want to strengthen their midfield this summer for new manager Thomas Frank, with a deal for Morgan Gibbs-White currently on hold due to legal trouble with Nottingham Forest, while the expectation is that Yves Bissouma will be allowed to leave the club too.

Now it's been revealed that the club are looking into a potential deal for a previous long-term target in England star Gallagher as a potential option.

Player would prefer to stay in Madrid

Gallagher, who currently earns around £200,000-a-week with Atletico Madrid after joining from Chelsea last summer, enjoyed a fine first season under Diego Simeone.

His performances have seen Spurs maintain their interest in the England international, with Frank an admirer of the combative midfielder, and now the club have made contact with intermediaries to enquire about whether a deal to bring him back to the Premier League would be possible.

The 25-year-old is aware that he may not be a regular starter for Atletico Madrid next season, and with the World Cup on the horizon Spurs hope they can convince him to join. However, journalist Graeme Bailey believes he would prefer to stay at the Wanda Metropolitano instead.

“Gallagher at this point is happy at Madrid, very happy, he has thoroughly enjoyed working with Simeone and feels he made the right choice in moving.

“He does have the England situation in the back of his mind, I am told, and feelers have been put out by intermediaries to check on his potential options, but as said, ideally he stays put.”

Gallagher isn't the only midfielder being looked at by Tottenham, with talks having been held for Bayern Munich outcast Joao Palhinha about a potential return to the Premier League just 12 months after leaving London rivals Fulham.

Bayern have made the Portugal international available for just £26m and want to sell him, but Spurs are yet to firm up their interest with a formal offer.
