Cristian Romero could be sold for £70million as question marks over his Tottenham future arise once again.

The Argentine defender joined Spurs from Atalanta in the summer of 2021 and has since gone on to make over 140 appearances for the north London side, scoring 10 goals in the process.

Now 27 years of age and a regular for Argentina at international level, Romero has been linked with a move to Atletico Madrid. International teammate Julian Alvarez urged Romero to link up with him and Argentine legend Diego Simeone in the Spanish capital, revealing that he had multiple conversations with him to convince him to join Atletico.

Cristian Romero 'Could Be Sold For £70m'

Romero's future at Tottenham is secure after he signed a new long-term deal with the club in the summer. That said, former Spurs scout Bryan King still believes that the player has his price.

Speaking to Tottenham News, King said: “He’s only just signed a new contract, Romero. He signed an improved deal in the summer, and it’s made a big difference to his wage packet.

“He’s one of the highest-paid players at Tottenham, so it won’t be cheap to get him out. If Atletico think he’s going to walk out, they’ll have to think again.

“He’d cost £60million-70m.

“The fact that he’s Argentinian and Diego Simeone’s Argentinian will have nothing to do with it. If Spurs don’t want to sell, then he won’t go unless a crazy offer comes in, that is what it will take.“

Romero Would Be A Huge Loss For Spurs

Speculation linking Romero with Atletico Madrid isn't new. The Argentine defender feels like a perfect fit for Simeone's side due to his fiercely competitive nature and fiery personality. At times that does get him into trouble in north London, but if he was to leave, it would be a big blow.

Romero is a massive player in the Tottenham dressing room and his personality is a huge part of that. At 27 years of age, Romero is now entering his prime years and that could be huge for Spurs if they can keep him for the duration of his new, long-term deal.

Much will depend on Tottenham qualifying for the Champions League on a consistent basis. If they can't offer him football in Europe's elite competition then a move to Atletico could accelerate quite quickly and that would be a huge blow.
