As a club, we are committed to creating opportunities for girls and women to feel part of the game and to see a clear pathway into football, whether that’s on the pitch or behind the scenes.
On Monday 9 March, we welcomed 65 girls from six local schools to our Training Centre to celebrate International Women’s Day. The event brought together young players from across the community for a day designed to celebrate the impact of women in football while providing a fun, inclusive environment where girls could experience the game and learn more about the opportunities available to them.
Throughout the day, participants took part in a carousel of football activations inspired by our Spurs DNA and playing philosophy, before putting their skills into practice in a festival-style tournament. Every participant received a football and a match ticket, ensuring the day became a memorable first experience with the club for many of the girls involved.
The event was delivered by an all-female coaching team, supported by our Under-19 academy players, who played an important role in creating a welcoming and inspiring environment for the young participants. The day was led by Jess Gordon, who joined the club through the Powerhouse Project – an initiative designed to bring more women into roles within football clubs.
Alongside the football activities, women from across the club – including former Spurs Women’s players Jenna Schillaci and Riana Soobadoo - spent time speaking with the girls about the wide range of career opportunities within the game, from coaching and performance to marketing, media and operations, helping to highlight the many ways they could one day be part of football.
Reflecting on the day, a teacher from Lyon’s Hall Primary School said: "The event was really good – all our girls came back buzzing having had the opportunity to visit the training ground. The coaches were excellent and the Under-19 players were a real credit to the club as well, so friendly and engaging. Thanks again for inviting us and if any spaces are available for anything in the future, we'd love to come.”
We are proud to continue creating opportunities like this for young people in our local community. Girls-only programmes are now available to book for the Easter holidays, as well as evening sessions across April and May, providing even more chances for girls to get involved, develop their skills and enjoy the game.
