It’s our second match in the new league phase of the competition following a goalless draw – and subsequent loss on penalties – against West Ham last week. We will also face Bristol City, Leicester City, Crystal Palace and Ipswich Town.
The trip to Crawley Town’s Broadfield Stadium comes hot on the heels of a fine performance and 4-0 win against Villa in the WSL on Sunday, where the team racked up 35 efforts at goal – a display described by Martin as ‘the best in the time I’ve been here’.
Not surprisingly, the target is more of the same against a Seagulls side without a win yet in the WSL, despite pushing Arsenal (0-1) and London City Lionesses (0-2) all the way. Brighton opened their Subway Players Cup league phase with a 4-0 win against Charlton.
Speaking to us on Tuesday, Martin stated: “Wins are important and a winning mentality is important. It builds momentum, confidence, enthusiasm within the group, morale around the group.
“We went into the game against West Ham last week with the intention to win, we didn’t, now we’ll do the same, but we have to make sure we apply ourselves correctly. If we do that, we give ourselves a chance.
“Then, the quality has got to be there without the ball to make sure we defend our box and capitalise on the chances we get around their box.
“The intention is always to go out and win and we'll do the same going into Wednesday.”
As for Brighton, Martin added: “They have very good individuals, a top team in terms of the way they put things together. A change of manager has definitely given them a different dimension - very vertical in their play, very good in terms of transition moments and build-up to those moments.
“Their high pressure is very good, they're very organised and robust in terms of the structure they play in. Then, in those moments with the ball, they have some very dangerous players one-vs-one, players who can create big opportunities and those one-vs-one moments which usually end up in goalscoring opportunities.
“They have a really good blend of experience and youth within that team and players who are pushing to contribute to performances. We will have to be at our best again to nullify their threat and then make sure that we take advantage of the areas we feel we can exploit.”
