The star had almost joined the Serie A club.

Serie A giants Inter Milan had been highly linked with a move for Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, who was looking to secure a move away from N17 in the off-season following a lot of ups, downs and criticisms since he moved to Hotspur Way.

Vicario move to Inter was almost done

Everything looked like the norm for a long time, with personal agreement between Vicario and Inter having already been reached, and the former Empoli man was quite keen on the move. Although the 29-year-old had his bags packed, the demands from Tottenham ended up being a sticking point, and the transfer never progressed from there.

And now according to the latest from TuttoSport and Gazzetta dello Sport (as relayed by Sportwitness), Inter have pulled out of their push to sign Guglielmo Vicario. Both the new papers confirmed that Italian champions have instead turned to Josep Martinez as their first-choice goalkeeper when the next season comes around, which now ends months of rumours linking Vicario as Yann Sommer’s successor at the San Siro.

Inter’s sporting director Piero Ausilio even travelled to London to speak with the 29-year-old’s agent, and discussions were advanced enough that the personal terms conversation had been completed. But it has come to nothing.

A report from TuttoSport insists that manager Cristian Chivu is convinced that the Spaniard can serve as Inter’s number one when next season comes around, which ends up removing any sense of urgency that had been pushing them to move for Vicario.

Inter shelled out €14m in order to purchase Martinez from Genoa two years back and do not want to write off their money spent on him by spending more on Vicario. Inter cannot pay more than €20m for Vicario, who, in his turn, believes that this amount is much too little, and this is why this disagreement around the pricing point has ended up being what has led to the negotiations to stop.

What now for Vicario?

Vicario’s agent, Gabriele Giuffrida, does have an extensive network in Serie A and should be well-positioned to source out another potential suitor for the 29-year-old if the summer exit is something that Vicario really wants.

Juventus are looking for a starting goalkeeper to take over from Mattia Perin, while Fiorentina will have yet another gap in the starting goalkeeping position with the potential loss of David De Gea in the upcoming transfer window. And there is a possibility that AS Roma could also be a possible destination should Mile Svilar leave in the summer.
