James Maddison could be in line to make his highly awaited Tottenham Hotspur return against Leeds United.

The Englishman has spent the best part of a year sidelined due to an anterior cruciate ligament injury and has been back in training over the last few weeks.

Maddison, who is part of Spurs’ leadership group, would add another dimension to the Lilywhites’ attack, but the N17 outfit has been very protective over the midfielder.

Despite being in Tottenham’s squad over the last three match weeks, Roberto De Zerbi has not handed him any minutes.

However, ahead of Tottenham facing Leeds, the Italian has hinted he could finally return to the pitch, and his record suggests a boost for Spurs.

Why James Maddison would be timely boost for Tottenham vs Leeds

De Zerbi confirmed in his pre-match press conference that he is “thinking” about the Englishman.

The Spurs manager, speaking about the midfielder’s chances to play, stated: “I am thinking about James Maddison because I am watching a top, top player. Maybe he is not ready yet to play, not as a physical condition but for the rhythm or intensity of the game.”

In truth, the 29-year-old is unlikely to start, and if he does come off the bench, it would likely be for a short cameo.

So far, his injury has kept him out of 46 matches for Tottenham.

Nonetheless, with De Zerbi opening the door, despite his uncertainty over his physical condition, his inclusion would strike fear into Leeds.

Maddison in four Premier League appearances against the Elland Road side has picked up three assists. That is despite the fact he has only managed to start in two of those games.

His creativity would be a huge asset for Spurs as they looked to maintain their Premier League status, with Maddison averaging 1.2 key passes per game last season according to Sofascore. He also achieved seven assists.

Is Maddison worth the risk for Tottenham?

While the update on Maddison is a positive, De Zerbi should only use him as a break in case of an emergency situation.

There is no point in risking the 29-year-old’s rehabilitation, and there is a likely chance he is not match-fit yet.

In truth, it may not be until next season that Spurs fans get to see Maddison in action, other than if survival is confirmed and De Zerbi gives him the final few minutes in the last game of the season.

Tottenham will certainly not be helped by the referee appointed for this weekend’s fixture against Leeds.
