The Reds will host Chelsea in round four after an impressive 3-1 victory over Spurs at Anfield on Tuesday night.
McConnell made his first appearance of the season by starting alongside Alexis Mac Allister and Trey Nyoni in midfield.
The 22-year-old thoroughly enjoyed his hour-long runout and told Liverpoolfc.com post-match: “It was good. Very hard, when you haven’t been playing it’s really tough on the legs to go into a game, especially against a team as good as that.
“It was enjoyable, 3-1 in the end, we’re in the next round so hopefully more opportunities. A good day in the end.
“My goal coming into the season was to play games and obviously when you end up staying in a squad like this, that’s going to be difficult. I think this competition always offers a chance for a manager to change.
“I think you’re always in a bit of doubt because obviously we have really strong opposition in the first round, but it’s really good of the manager to show faith in me and some of the other lads.
“We did well and hopefully we can get another opportunity.”
McConnell played in a more advanced role than he has done previously in the senior team and added: “I like playing there, that’s where I came up when I was younger.
“It’s obviously a bit different with some things I haven’t done in a while but it’s enjoyable. The press is really simple in that position, you’ve just got to go, and on the ball I like receiving it in the pockets and driving.
“There’s obviously a lot more to come because it’s tough when it’s your first game in a long time, but I think there were positives and we’re into the next round, so it’s good.”
Fellow Academy graduate Lewis Koumas joined McConnell in the starting XI, with Nyoni and Rio Ngumoha also part of the team selected by Andoni Iraola.
And McConnell feels the displays of the senior players in the side were helpful to their more inexperienced teammates.
He continued: “I don’t even know if I’m a youngster anymore, some of these guys are so young! But we’re all part of the squad and you don’t look at anyone any different.
“I thought the senior lads were really, really good – Jeremie [Frimpong] behind us at right-back was top, Macca [Mac Allister] in the middle was really, really good.
“I think all of them were and it’s always easier for younger lads coming in when the senior lads play so well.”
