Sandro Tonali looks set to be on the move this summer with Tottenham, Man Utd, Man City and Arsenal all interested in the Newcastle United ace

Jamie Carragher would have liked Liverpool to make a move for Sandro Tonali this summer with the midfielder set to leave Newcastle United.

Tonali has interest from the Reds' Premier League rivals Manchester City, Arsenal and Manchester United but it is Tottenham Hotspur who have made their move, seeing a $106 million (£80 million) bid rejected at the weekend.

The 26-year-old looks set to leave the Magpies this summer and follow one-time Liverpool transfer target - and boyhood Reds fan - Anthony Gordon out of the St James' Park exit door after his move to Barcelona earlier this summer.

Liverpool are making changes of their own ahead of the new season having brought in Andoni Iraola to replace Arne Slot with moves to be made in the transfer market.

Former Liverpool star Carragher earmarked Tonali as a potential signing for his old side as they look to revamp their midfield. Curtis Jones could be on the way out, though the Reds are frustrated by Inter Milan's attempts to sign the 25-year-old, while there have been concerns over the form of Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch after strong 2024/25 campaigns.

"Tonali is a midfielder I really rate," Carragher said on Sky Sports. "I think he's got great pace and power in that midfield. "It wasn't his best season last season but it's difficult when you're not playing for a team who are playing well.

"He's certainly a player I looked at thinking for Liverpool. I think it (moving to Tottenham) would be a good move all-round really." Tottenham, meanwhile are making moves to ensure that a repeat of last season's relegation battle is not on the cards.

Roberto De Zerbi's side have already moved for Liverpool-linked Brighton & Hove Albion defender Jan Paul van Hecke and want to sign Marcus Rashford from United. "I like what Spurs are doing and I like what De Zerbi is doing," Carragher added.

"Spurs, for a long time had a reputation, didn't they, of going to the last minute of transfer deadline trying to do the best deal they possibly could under Daniel Levy.

"Since Levy has left it hasn't gone particularly well, so I think they are under a bit of pressure as well. "De Zerbi has come in and done a really good job and I think he has got a lot of power at that club right now, probably the most he will have unless he wins a big trophy."

"He's put his foot down, he wants players in quickly fo them to start pre-season."
