Jamie Redknapp admits he has changed his tune about one Tottenham Hotspur star as he has seen more of him.
Many players struggle to shake off the early reputation they develop among the media in England.
One such example is current Tottenham captain Cristian Romero, who continues to be labelled as overrated, owing to some of his brash tackles early in his Spurs career.
Even though the 27-year-old has a much-improved disciplinary record over the past few years, some still view him as a red card waiting to happen.
Jamie Redknapp has changed his mind about Tottenham captain Cristian Romero
Redknapp waxed lyrical about the Spurs centre-back for his brace against Newcastle, admitting that the defender’s diving header for his first was up there with one of the best he has seen.
The former Tottenham midfielder revealed that he was not the biggest fan of the Argentine at first, but admitted that he has grown on him.
The pundit Sky Sports Premier League Live (2/12/25 – 22:28): “That is bravery at his best. Dan Burn is throwing his left foot, and he’s throwing his head at it. We’ve seen some great diving headers in the Premier League, Robin van Persie springs to mind. Some really brave, great headers and that is up there with the best of them.

“He gets across him, he’s aggressive and he gets into Dan Burn’s blind spot, and then he just nips in front of him, it is a brilliant header. That’s the sort of player he is, you see him at the end, he’s fiery and him and Guimaraes are having a row. I wasn’t always his biggest fan, but I must admit, he has certainly grown on me.”
A true captain’s performance by Romero
Given the growing disconnect between the Spurs players and the fans, and the doom and gloom surrounding the club, the Lilywhites desperately needed their big players to stand up at St James’ Park.
That is exactly what Romero did, and his determination to get on the end of that cross from Mohammed Kudus tells you the kind of character he is.
It would have been easy for the Tottenham players to feel sorry for themselves when that controversial penalty was awarded to Newcastle.
The desire they showed to throw bodies forward and fight back shows what this set of players are made of.
