Cristian Romero remains a key talking point at Tottenham despite returning for pre-season.

Romero has been dropping hints that his future might lie away from N17, including posting an emotional message dedicated to Ange Postecoglou shortly after Thomas Frank was appointed.

The centre-back has been heavily linked with a move to Atletico Madrid, previously stating that he would like to challenge himself in La Liga.

Nevertheless, the Argentine reported back at Hotspur Way after his summer break to start training and formally meet with the new coaching staff.

Daniel Levy has not had the best relationship with Romero, but is keen to keep hold of the World Cup winner and has been handed a significant boost following a recent update.

Atletico halt pursuit of Romero amid new contract claim at Spurs

Atletico and Spurs have been engaged in an unofficial tug of war over Romero, with Tottenham still awaiting a formal offer for the player.

Their valuations of the talented defender are significantly off, and Levy believes he holds all the bargaining chips as the 27-year-old still has two years left on his contract.

The saga has dragged on for months, which has led to Atletico effectively ending their pursuit of Romero, as reported by The Athletic (11 July).

The Spanish club are also under the impression that Tottenham will look to offer their vice-captain a new contract in a bid to retain him beyond 2027.

Frank demonstrably agrees with his predecessor’s assessment that Spurs must retain arguably their best player if they are to continue their path towards more success.

However, Levy will have to break the bank to offer Romero a new contract as the defender will expect significant financial compensation to hand over leverage on his future and commit to the Lilywhites.

Romero is worth every penny for Spurs

There was a moment midway through last season when Romero was struggling with injuries and form, which may have left Tottenham open to cashing in on the Argentina international.

However, the defender’s imperious performances with a trophy on the line months later would have completely changed that perspective.

The former Juventus player was crowned the UEFA Europa League Player of the Year, as well as picking up the Man of the Match award for his display in the final.

His leadership and calmness at the back, both in and out of possession, showcased his class and proved that he is worth every penny that a new contract would cost Levy to secure his future with Spurs permanently.
