Daniel Levy looks set to back Thomas Frank heavily in the transfer market.

The Spurs chairman has been subject to plenty of criticism over the years for his lack of spending, but that could be set to change as he looks to arm Frank with a squad capable of firing them back up the Premier League table next term.

Levy made a big call in dismissing Ange Postecoglou, and he now has to ensure that he provides the resources to back up that decision.

Tottenham have been linked with the likes of Bryan Mbeumo and Antoine Semenyo in recent weeks, in what could be a very transformative summer in N17.

Tottenham hailed over £5m Kota Takai transfer

For all of the big-money links to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in recent weeks, a far more modest deal has garnered attention in recent days.

Tottenham have reached an agreement to sign Kota Takai for £5million, in what looks set to become the record sale from the Japanese J. League.

The Kawasaki Frontale youngster has shown plenty of promise in the last few years, and that has been recognised by Levy and Co., who are now ready to bring him to North London.

Takai will arrive at Spurs as an unknown to the majority of the fanbase, but he has been described by Kenta Hagiwara, who co-owns The Asian Football Show podcast, as an “elite defender.”

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, the Asian football expert has heaped praise on Spurs’ likely acquisition.

“From a stats standpoint, Takai is an elite defender,” Hagiwara said. “He’s one of the better centre-backs in the J. League in terms of defensive actions, blocks, and tackles. And he’s only 20 years old.

“I think he can probably contribute and put in good minutes at Premier League level. All the general traits that you’d want from a young centre-back are there for him to succeed, but you can never truly be sure that a player’s skillset translates well into any given league.

“Takai is a really, really good defender. He has good defensive instincts and a good understanding of timing in his tackles. I think he’ll do well for himself in London.

Takai is a great investment for Tottenham

It remains to be seen whether Takai will slot straight into Frank’s first-team squad, but there can be no doubt that he is a fantastic long-term investment for the Lilywhites.

The centre-back already has ample first-team experience despite his tender age, and at just £5m, it could prove to be a steal for Spurs, given the amount of development that he still has ahead of him.

They might have to wait a few years to reap the full benefits of their investment, but Tottenham may well have just discovered a fantastic defensive prospect for the future.
