Liverpool has reportedly made a call to West Ham United about a move for the midfielder Mateus Fernandes as Andoni Iraola weighs up summer additions

Liverpool has reportedly shown interest in Mateus Fernandes this summer, with the West Ham United star regularly being touted for a switch to either Manchester United or Tottenham Hotspur. The Reds has hit the ground running with their summer transfer activity, having already wrapped up one new addition.

Victor Munoz has sealed his transfer to Liverpool this summer from Osasuna, with the Reds agreeing to pay a $45.6million fee to the Spanish side after beating Newcastle United to the 22-year-old's signature.

Andoni Iraola will be occupied with preparations for the upcoming season, with pre-season kicking off next month, including a tour to the United States.

Munoz may well be the first acquisition in what promises to be a hectic summer of transfer activity at Liverpool, though it remains uncertain which other players might arrive at Anfield in the coming weeks and months.

Fernandes had not previously been connected with a potential move to Liverpool this summer, but Fabrizio Romano has offered an update on the Portugal international's situation.

Romano has revealed that Liverpool made a "call" to West Ham regarding the 21-year-old's prospects, and provided insight into the club's summer window strategy.

"I will tell you something that was not so public in the recent days and weeks," Romano said on the Born 'N Red YouTube channel.

"Liverpool made a call two weeks ago to understand the situation Mateus Fernandes at West Ham, to understand the price and conditions, but they didn't return with any bid or any official conversation.

"But they made a call two weeks ago, I can guarantee that. Tottenham and Manchester United are busy with a deal, so there are so many clubs involved.

"The player is going to be expensive, more than £85million ($112m). It means Liverpool are working on midfielders."

Liverpool have predominantly been linked with forward signings so far this summer, with RB Leipzig star Yan Diomande emerging as a reported target for the Reds.

In terms of midfield activity, the future of Curtis Jones has become a talking point at Anfield this summer.

Inter Milan have signalled their desire to sign the 25-year-old, however the Reds turned down an offer from the Serie A outfit over the weekend.

The Italian giants' bid fell considerably short of Liverpool's asking price, with the Reds reportedly seeking a fee nearer to $46m for Jones this summer.
