We are already rapidly approaching the third week of July. While time keeps moving quicker by the day, so does the transfer rumour mill as Premier League sides look to upgrade their squads ahead of pre-season. We bring you some of the latest transfer rumours to sink your teeth into, beginning once again at the Emirates, where the wage demands of a top target have been revealed.
One of the headline transfers of the summer draws ever closer to completion, after reports last week that Viktor Gyokeres had completed personal terms with Arsenal. Now, as per reports by Caught Offside, the Swedish striker’s wage demands have been revealed. They cite The Mirror in reporting that Gyokeres will earn over £200,000 a week at the Emirates, instantly making him one of the club’s top earners.
This reflects how important it is to Mikel Arteta to get this deal over the line. The report continues by reinforcing that Gyokeres has agreed a five-year deal with the Gunners valid until 2030 and is ‘desperate’ for the move.
The 3AM verdict: While it does depend on how far over £200,000 his wage demands are, we feel a figure slightly above that number is reasonable enough considering the gaping hole Gyokeres would be filling at Arsenal. He could be the difference between another second-placed finish and potentially going one further, and that is priceless.
Man United and Spurs to do battle once again?
Europa League final foes Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur could be heading into the ring once again, this time for the signature of one of ‘Europe’s most coveted young defenders’.
That is according to Caught Offside, who report that the two Premier League giants are after Genoa defender Koni De Winter, a young Belgian with the type of promise invoked by the similarities in his name to another Belgian national treasure. The 23-year-old centre-back has made 57 appearances for Genoa in two seasons, including a loan spell from Juventus in 2023/24. The young man has come into his own at the heart of defence, but can also operate from full-back or defensive midfield. A move is likely to cost between €30m-€35m (£25.8m-£30.1m).
The 3AM verdict: Both sides are in need of a new central defender this summer, and going for potential is the name of the game so this could be a good purchase. Victor Lindelof has left United, while there are arguably question marks surrounding all of their centre-half options. Whereas Spurs may yet lose Cristian Romero and will have a tough job at hand to replace him if that were to happen. Inter Milan may yet throw their hat in the ring according to reports, which could make things more difficult.
Newcastle United close in on Anthony Elanga deal
Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United have been ramping up their interest in Nottingham Forest winger Anthony Elanga, but they are still preparing alternative options for if they cannot get a deal over the line. PSV Eindhoven ace Johan Bakayoko could be the answer according to GiveMeSport, who state that the Magpies have scouted the Belgian international for some time but will only pursue a move if they do not bring in Elanga.
The report quotes Football Insider’s claim that Bakayoko would be a ‘cheaper alternative’ to Elanga, though a valuation by PSV is not stated. The 22-year-old is worth just €30m according to Transfermarkt, having just entered the last 12 months of his contract.
However, transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has given the deal his trademark ‘Here We Go’ verdict, suggesting the move is for Elanga close to completion, in what would represent a huge breakthrough in the Magpies’ summer business.
The 3AM verdict: Though he does not have Premier League experience like Elanga, Bakayoko has won 18 Belgium caps and made 20 Champions League appearances, so he would be a more than worthy alternative. This move may not cause as many shock waves as the potential signing of Elanga, who Newcastle are likely to continue to target. But they are in need of a right-wing option either way and should aim to complete either deal sooner rather than later.
