Manchester United have got the green light to sign target Cristian Romero this summer with Tottenham Hotspur willing to sell their captain, according to CaughtOffside.

Man United are closing in on being able to offer the carrot of Champions League football to potential summer transfer targets, following their win against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

It moved the Red Devils 10 points clear of the Blues ahead of their clash with Brighton and Hove Albion on Tuesday night, and they look set to return to Europe's elite club competition for the first time since the 2023-24 season.

Doing that will not only give the club a huge boost financially, but it could raise the profile of their transfer targets as they look to make big progress again next term.

United's summer transfer priority is in central midfield as they look to replace Casemiro, who will leave Old Trafford when his contract expires at the end of the season.

But they could look at other positions too including a left-sided winger, a striker, a right-back and a centre-back following the injury issues they've had in that position this term.

Tottenham Set Romero Price Tag

According to CaughtOffside, Tottenham are ready to sell Romero this summer and he may have played his last game for the club given he has been ruled out for the rest of the season through injury.

Manchester United have been named as being interested in the Spurs skipper, who is valued at between around £50-55m by the north Londoners, because of his quality and the fact that his contract doesn't expire until 2029.

Along with United, La Liga giants Atletico Madrid have held a long-term interest in Romero, with manager Diego Simeone seeing him as the perfect defensive leader, while neighbours Real Madrid have also been linked.

The Red Devils are said to see Romero's Premier League experience as an attractive trait, as it begins to form a strong part of their transfer strategy after the additions of Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo last summer.

This window, United are mainly considering Premier League stars such as Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson and Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton for their central midfield signing.

Romero Would be a Bittersweet Signing

Rather like Lisandro Martinez, there is no doubting Romero's commitment and desire to do everything to win for his team.

The issue that the 27-year-old has is sometimes he goes too far or loses his head, like he has done on six occasions during his Tottenham career when he has been red-carded.

United would surely want to see a big improvement in his discipline if he did end up moving to Old Trafford, as they can't afford to have too many matches in the Premier League and the Champions League when they are down to 10 men.

Nevertheless, the 'world-class' Romero would be a brilliant market opportunity for United, especially if Tottenham do suffer a devastating relegation to the Championship.

There is no doubting the quality he has and given the injury issues they have suffered with the likes of Martinez and Matthijs de Ligt this term, the addition of Romero could give the backline a nice boost.
