Manchester United were beaten in the Europa League final by Tottenham Hotspur and they could soon be beaten to a summer transfer by them as well. United finally completed the signing of Matheus Cunha from Wolves on Thursday and remain in the market for another attacking midfielder, as well as a striker this summer.
United have already seen a bid rejected by Brentford for Bryan Mbeumo and they might have to act quickly if they are to land the French playmaker. The London club turned down an opening offer of £45 million, plus £10m in add-ons, as they value Mbeumo in the same region of the £62.5m that will be paid for Cunha.
It is understood United will make a revised second bid for Mbeumo soon, though they could face serious competition from Tottenham in a move for the forward after manager Thomas Frank left Brentford to take charge of the North London club.
Tottenham 'receive encouragement' over Mbeumo deal
Manchester United are still viewed as the favourites to sign Bryan Mbeumo this summer after the 25-year-old initially decided he would prefer a move to Old Trafford over any other option this summer. Arsenal and Newcastle have both also expressed an interest to sign him, though he believes he would have a more regular role at United next season.
Mbeumo wasn't as keen on a move to Tottenham amid their managerial uncertainty, though it is suggested he is now more open to a move after former Brentford boss Thomas Frank was appointed their new head coach. The French forward has played under Frank throughout his six year spell in England and has played a key part in their rise under the manager.
Sky Sports claim Tottenham have now held initial discussions with Brentford about a deal for Mbeumo and say the player is 'more intrigued by a move' because of Frank's appointment. The report adds Spurs have even 'received encouragement' about a potential deal, with United yet to submit an improved bid.
Manchester United could consider alternatives
Manchester United are still hopeful they can secure a move for Bryan Mbeumo in the summer transfer window but they will face serious competition from Tottenham Hotspur for his signature. Ruben Amorim wants to add another attacking midfielder to his side, with a move for Mbeumo independent of Cunha's arrival. There is a desire to add players who are already proven in the Premier League this summer, as Amorim looks to improve the overall fitness and athleticism of his side ahead of a campaign in which they will only play domestic matches.
There is still hope an agreement can be found between the two parties, with Mbeumo understood to prefer a move to Old Trafford over Arsenal, Newcastle or Tottenham. United are relaxed about the situation and will soon present a revised bid to Brentford in the hope they can reach a breakthrough.
They are adamant they will not overpay for the playmaker though, and have little interest in protracted talks for his signature, so could consider other options if there is little compromise over a deal, with Eberechi Eze and Antoine Semenyo both also of interest.
