Following an outstanding display in the Europa League final, a Tottenham Hotspur star was showered with praise by his compatriot, who plays for Manchester United.

Tottenham needed their big names and their experienced heads to step up in order to get over the line in the 1-0 win over Manchester United in Bilbao.

The player that many were looking to lead the way in the final is Cristian Romero, who has played a vital role in Argentina’s back-to-back Copa America wins and their World Cup victory in 2022.

The 27-year-old started the game as captain with Heung-min Son initially only found a place on the bench.

Romero led from the front, helping the Lilywhites keep another clean sheet and deliver a very un-Tottenham-like gritty display in the final.

Alejandro Garnacho’s praise for Cristian Romero

Romero was deemed the Man of the Match for the final and the Europa League Player of the Season, with the centre-back being recognised for his heroic efforts to drag Tottenham over the line.

Romero was also one of four Tottenham players named in the Europa League Team of the Season, and the former Juventus man has also come in for high praise from a player in the opposition.

His international teammate, Alejandro Garnacho, told ESPN Argentina after the final whistle: “We know Cuti, he’s the best centre-back in the world.”

What does the future hold for Cristian Romero at Tottenham?

If there were any doubts over the Argentine’s credentials as one of the best defenders in the world, those have been quashed on the back of the performance he has delivered in the latter stages of the Europa League.

Over the last few weeks, there have been a lot of rumours suggesting Romero is keen to leave Tottenham this summer, and unfortunately for Spurs, his performance at Bilbao will only intensify the interest in his services.
