Manchester United vs Spurs match preview

In a battle between two of the Premier League’s biggest underperformers this season, United are the 7/10 favourites to beat Tottenham, who are 10/3, with the draw priced at 16/5.

It may come as a surprise to punters to see United odds-on for a win given they have picked up only two this season – against Ipswich Town and Champions League debutants Sabah.

They signed off before the international break with a disappointing 1-1 draw at Fulham, where a calamitous own goal from Lisandro Martinez left them on course for defeat until Matheus Cunha scored a deflected 89th-minute equaliser.

But the good news for United fans is that if their season has been a struggle, Tottenham’s has been far worse.

Spurs, who are 8/1 with Betfred to be relegated this season, went into the extended international break bottom of the Premier League table with no wins, two draws and three defeats to their name.

They at least found the net for the first time this season before the hiatus, scoring their first Premier League goal after 407 minutes of trying in the 3-2 home defeat by Aston Villa.

That loss was particularly crushing given Roberto De Zerbi’s men were the team on top until Johan Manzambi struck for the visitors in first-half stoppage time.

There are a few injury doubts for United, who could be without Patrick Dorgu, Noussair Mazraoui, Kobbie Mainoo and Benjamin Sesko.

As for Spurs, Xavi Simons is a long-term absentee with an ACL injury, Pedro Porro is out and Jan Paul van Hecke will be assessed for a foot issue he picked up on international duty with the Netherlands.

If you’re looking for a bet on this game that meets the qualifying criteria of the odds being 1/1 (2.0) or above, I would consider both teams to score and over 3.5 goals at 6/4.

Goals have been in short supply for Tottenham this season but they have got on the scoresheet in their last two fixtures, losing 3-1 to Liverpool in the EFL Cup before that defeat by Villa.

United’s games have averaged 3.2 goals per game this season with both teams scoring in three of their five league assignments and neither of these sides look particularly reliable at the back.
