We are delighted to announce that Cristian Romero has signed a new, long-term contract with the Club.
Having initially joined the Club on a season-long loan from Serie A side Atalanta in August, 2021, the Argentina international signed permanently the following year.
Named captain by Thomas Frank ahead of the UEFA Super Cup earlier this month, the 27-year-old has made a total of 126 appearances in our colours to date, scoring eight times.
Cristian arrived as the ‘Best Defender’ in Serie A in 2020/21 and helped us to secure a return to the UEFA Champions League in his debut season with the Club, as we enjoyed a sensational second half of the campaign.
A commanding central defender, he was appointed vice-captain alongside James Maddison in August, 2023, and an impressive campaign saw him make 33 Premier League starts, scoring on five occasions. He was also shortlisted for the Premier League’s Player of the Month award for October, 2023.
Captain for the final four matches of our run to European glory last term, ‘Cuti’ played a vital role in our UEFA Europa League success and claimed the competition’s Player of the Season award. He was named Player of the Match in the Final while he also earned a place in the 2024/25 UEFA Europa League Team of the Season alongside team-mates Guglielmo Vicario, Pedro Porro, and Dominic Solanke.
At international level, he made his senior debut for Argentina in a World Cup qualifier against Chile in June, 2021, and now has 44 caps to his name for La Albiceleste, scoring three times.
Cristian has enjoyed huge success with Argentina, helping his country to the 2021 and 2024 Copa America titles, the CONMEBOL-UEFA Cup of Champions and, most notably, World Cup glory at Qatar 2022.
