Newcastle United could not resist posting a picture of Sandro Tonali looking worse for wear during the 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur.
It was the Italian’s turn to face the Toon boo boys - who let their voices be heard every time he touched the ball. Alexander Isak had faced - and struggled to deal with - the Geordie wrath a week earlier.
And like his former Newcastle teammate, Tonali also looked a shell of his black-and-white capabilities. Roberto De Zerbi hooked the 26-year-old on 74 minutes immediately after Yoane Wissa’s clincher.
Newcastle United troll Sandro Tonali
Newcastle’s media team posted a cheeky photo of Tonali during the game. In the image, Joe Willock proudly stood over the £100million man as he lay on the deck.
An air of doubt must have crept into Tonali’s mind as he left the North London turf. He made no secret that his Newcastle exit was for non-football reasons - namely to live in the capital.
Almost doubling his pay packet to a staggering £275,000 per week was also likely a deciding factor. As for the Magpies, they have a new midfield maestro in town as Nico Gonzalez outshone Tonali on the big stage.
‘Confidence’ - Matthias Jaissle
Speaking post-match, the German vowed that the win - which he called well-deserved - over Spurs will give his players confidence after a turbulent off-season. Jaissle added: “I’m really pleased, not only because of the goals we scored, also because of the performance they showed and how they were improving during a match.
“That gives me confidence and should give us confidence to be able to adjust things. That's what the lads showed, especially in the second half. It was really good in both phases, we even controlled the transition moments much better. Therefore, I also think it was, in the end, a well-deserved win.”
