Newcastle United are “in talks” with Tottenham Hotspur to buy midfielder Lucas Bergvall, according to reports – and £50m could be enough to sign him.

The 20-year-old Swede reportedly wants to leave Spurs following the arrivals of Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes.

Bergvall signed for Spurs from Swedish club Djurgården IF in 2024, and was voted Player of the Season by Spurs fans after an impressive debut season. His contract expires in 2031.

What Is The Truth About Newcastle’s Links With Bergvall?

The Athletic claimed in June that Bergvall had told Spurs that he wanted to leave this summer after being sidelined by previous managers Thomas Frank and Igor Tudor.

He is also said to be worried about falling down the pecking order behind Tonali and Fernandes.

There has been claim and counterclaim about Newcastle’s attempt to sign Bergvall.

David Ornstein reported in The Athletic that Newcastle bid £46m for the youngster, which was rejected by Spurs.

Nottingham Forest also bid for Bergvall, but their offer of £38m was also turned down.

Lee Ryder, however, claims that things happened a little differently. According to him, Spurs offered Bergvall to Newcastle because they need to recoup money after spending £185m on Tonali and Fernandes. Ryder says that “high level talks” are taking place.

While Keith Downie confirmed that talks are taking place between the two clubs, he didn’t corroborate the claims about Newcastle’s rejected bid but did hint that £50m might be enough to get the deal done.

It is always difficult to know what the truth is in transfer rumours, but both sides are clearly willing to do a deal if they can find common ground.

Would Bergvall Be a Good Signing?

Bergvall has made 78 appearances for Spurs overall, scoring one goal and making four assists.

His time there has been disrupted by injury, however. An ankle injury kept him out for over a month shortly after he arrived at the club, and in January this year, he had surgery on an ankle sprain, which kept him out for a couple of months.

That means he could be a risk for Newcastle, whose midfield was decimated by injuries last season.

Total Football Analysis describes him as a great ballcarrier with an eye for a long cross-field pass, who operates well under pressure.

His role as a box-to-box midfielder would make him a great replacement for either Tonali or Bruno Guimarães, whose future on Tyneside is still uncertain.

Bergvall has Premier League experience, unlike Newcastle’s three new signings, which could prove invaluable.

It would be a great deal if Newcastle can pull it off.
