Defender Cristian Romero has ended speculation about his future by signing a new long-term contract with Tottenham Hotspur. Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian Romero has signed a new long-term contract with the club.

The 27-year-old had been linked with a move away, with Atletico Madrid among the clubs interested, but he has now committed his future to the UEFA Europa League winners.

It comes just weeks after he was named captain by Thomas Frank following Son Heung-min’s departure for Los Angeles FC.

Romero captained Spurs through the final stages of their Europa League triumph, earning player of the match in the famous 1-0 victory over Manchester United that ended the club’s 17-year trophy drought.

The Argentina centre-back initially joined Spurs from Atalanta on a season-long loan in August 2021, before signing on a permanent deal the following year for a reported fee of £42.5 million, having helped the club return to the UEFA Champions League.

Romero has made 126 appearances for Tottenham, scoring eight goals, including netting in the UEFA Super Cup penalty shoot-out defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.

He has been capped 44 times with Argentina, helping his country to World Cup glory in 2022 as well as Copa America titles in 2021 and 2024.

Unveiling Romero as his club captain recently, Frank said: "He was very honoured and very happy about it. It’s a big thing and should be to lead this wonderful club out on the pitch, not just for this Super Cup, but also throughout the season.

"I think he has all the right qualities. He leads from his behaviour on the pitch, driving the team forward in every way, and outside the pitch he’s always pushing the team."

Spurs opened their league campaign with a 3-0 win over Burnley. They now face champions Manchester City in Saturday’s early kick-off, live on TNT Sports and discovery+.
