Not Good Enough: Tottenham Star is Quickly Becoming the Next Ndombele Under De Zerbi

Tottenham Hotspur and their fans are certainly feeling better about their start to their season after their last three performances and results in the Premier League.

Tottenham have no European football to focus on and it was expected that it would be a positive in many ways, as Roberto De Zerbi looks to lead them up the Premier League table after successive 17th-place finishes in the English top flight.

However, after five league games, they sat bottom of the standings having taken just two points from a possible 15 available, and scoring just two goals.

It has been a big improvement since the 3-2 home defeat to Aston Villa last month, with Spurs the better side as they snatched a last-gasp 1-1 draw away at Manchester United.

De Zerbi's side have since followed that up with consecutive victories against Coventry City and Chelsea, winning both fixtures by a two-goal margin.

It appears as though their season has finally kickstarted, and the Italian boss will be hoping to build further on it when they host a struggling Crystal Palace at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday evening.

The 47-year-old appears to finally be getting closer to finding his best starting XI, with the recent returns to action for James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski further boosting his options, even if he may have lost the former to another injury issue against Chelsea.

One of De Zerbi's biggest conundrums this term has been the centre-forward position, with Richarlison bombed out of the reckoning and Omar Marmoush and Dominic Solanke only recently scoring their first Premier League goals of the campaign.

The latter continues to be a disappointment in a Tottenham shirt following a £65m move from Bournemouth in 2024.

Solanke May Have No Tottenham Future

De Zerbi actually selected Richarlison instead of Solanke on the opening day of the season at Brentford, with the Englishman's first Premier League start not coming until the 0-0 draw with Everton at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on September 12.

Solanke failed to make much of an impact in that game or against Villa, before De Zerbi actually decided to make him captain at Old Trafford.

It was Solanke who got the equaliser against Michael Carrick's side, although it came after a wasteful evening in front of goal for the 29-year-old.

After playing the full 90 minutes against Coventry, and failing to find the net, he started Saturday's match against Chelsea on the substitutes' bench, partly due to fatigue and partly because of a tactical decision.

De Zerbi explained: "He felt fatigue after the Coventry game. But also because I am lucky to have a big squad, many solutions, many different solutions in terms of characteristics and physical characteristics. I took this decision but the game is 90 minutes."

Being fatigued five days after your previous appearance is certainly interesting, and it isn't the first time that Tottenham haven't been able to rely on their £65m man.

It's becoming increasingly clear that if Spurs want to move to the next level in the next few seasons under De Zerbi, they need a better centre-forward than the likes of Richarlison and Solanke in the starting XI, and Marmoush probably isn't the answer either.

Ndombele was once Tottenham's record signing, but despite a promising start to his career in a Spurs shirt, it quickly fizzled out and he ended up being a player they couldn't rely on despite the big money spent on him.

It does feel like Solanke is beginning to go down a similar path to the Frenchman, given his price tag and how many fans just aren't convinced that he can contribute what he needs to in this team.

He clearly has something, as Ndombele did, but if you are unable to produce it consistently on the pitch, then it is no use for Tottenham, and they would be better off upgrading on him.
