Nottingham Forest have reportedly had a bid rejected for Newcastle United transfer target Yoane Wissa.
Newcastle are set to confirm the £55million signing of Anthony Elanga from Forest but are keen to recruit another forward following Callum Wilson’s departure.
The Magpies possess one of the best strikers in Europe in Alexander Isak but Wilson’s exit leaves them without an experienced back-up, with 21-year-old Will Osula yet to make a Premier League start since joining from Sheffield United for £15million last summer.
Strength in depth is crucial for Eddie Howe’s side this campaign ahead of a return to the Champions League.
Newcastle United eye forward after Callum Wilson departure
Newcastle have already come up short in two separate striker pursuits this summer. They held talks with Liam Delap but he opted to join Chelsea, as did Brazilian forward Joao Pedro, who, despite being open to joining United, always preferred a move to London after two years in Brighton.
It’s since been reported by Mail Online that Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins and Brentford’s Wissa have been discussed internally, though neither would come cheap.
Meanwhile, transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has claimed the Magpies retain an interest in Eintracht Frankfurt star Hugo Ekitike. The Frenchman almost joined in 2022 but snubbed a move to Tyneside in favour of joining Paris Saint-Germain.
After failing to impress at PSG, the 23-year-old moved to Frankfurt in January 2024, where he has scored 26 goals in 64 appearances.
Nottingham Forest make Yoane Wissa move
Of those options, Wissa is the one that has been the subject of an official bid this week, with The Athletic’s David Ornstein revealing Nottingham Forest have had an offer turned down by Brentford.
Forest attempted to sign Wissa for £25million in January but face paying double that now. After losing Thomas Frank to Tottenham Hotspur, Christian Norgaard to Arsenal and Bryan Mbeumo expected to join Manchester United, the Bees have little desire to lose Wissa too.
The 29-year-old Congo international, who scored 19 goals and registered five assists last season, is out of contract next June, though Brentford have an option to extend until 2027.
Forest are under pressure to bolster their attacking options ahead of a new campaign with Elanga’s departure set to be followed by Morgan Gibbs-White. Spurs have triggered Gibbs-White’s £60million release clause with the player due in London on Friday to undergo his medical.
Tottenham Hotspur linked with Yoane Wissa
Spurs too are said to be weighing up an offer for Wissa in a move that would see him quickly reunite with former boss Frank.
Earlier this week, BBC Sport’s Sami Mokbel wrote on X: “Tottenham moving for Brentford attacker Yoane Wissa, who is understood to be open to a move. #THFC weighing up financials attached to the deal.”
Wissa turns 29 in September and is set to cost £50m. Only time will tell if Newcastle firm up their interest.
