Leeds United make the trip down south to take on Tottenham Hotspur on Monday night in what could end up being a pivotal game at the bottom of the table.
Although Leeds’ Premier League status could already be mathematically secure going into that game if results go their way over the weekend, the same cannot be said for Spurs, who are firmly stuck in the relegation dogfight.
Before the season started, not many would have predicted that a newly promoted Leeds side would be sitting six points clear of Tottenham with just three Premier League games left, but that is the remarkable situation we find ourselves in.
Former Arsenal player Paul Merson recently had his say on the upcoming game, with the Sky Sports pundit sharing his “fear” regarding Leeds ahead of their trip to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Paul Merson makes incredible Tottenham vs Leeds United prediction
Leeds are in fine form going into their game against Spurs, losing just one of their last nine games. United could deal a major blow to Tottenham’s survival prospects in the process.
When predicting the outcome of the game in his latest column for , Merson predicted Daniel Farke’s men would pick up another positive result. That is in spite of having a major fear regarding the Whites ahead of the game.
“Leeds have been outstanding in recent weeks. Barring the FA Cup semi-final loss to Chelsea,” Merson said.
“If Leeds are in the mood, they can hurt Tottenham. There’s no doubt about it. I actually feel sorry for West Ham because Tottenham are playing Leeds at a favourable time. We know it’s all about timing in football.
“If Leeds were still heavily involved in the relegation battle, they would have been a huge test for Tottenham. Now I fear they might take the foot off the gas against Spurs on Monday.”
Merson continued: “This is a hugely important fixture for them (Tottenham). I just can’t back them against Leeds though. I think they lose this one!” Before going on to predict Leeds to pick up a 2-1 win on the road.
Opta’s supercomputer disagrees with Paul Merson’s Leeds United prediction
Although Opta are pretty much certain that United will still be a Premier League club come next season, with their chances of relegation sitting at just 0.12%, they are not confident in the Whites picking up a result against Tottenham.
According to Opta’s supercomputer, Leeds have a 26.7% chance of winning the game
Spurs’ chances are much higher, sitting at 50.9%
The chance of the game ending in a draw is 22.4%
Although Opta have us as the underdogs, there is no reason why we shouldn’t be confident going into this game.
Whilst Spurs have been in better form as of late under Roberto De Zerbi, it is still vital that we end the season on a high by picking up results, and hopefully that can stand us in good stead for next season.
Seeing Spurs go down would be one of the funniest things to happen in modern football, and we have a golden opportunity to ensure their battle for survival with West Ham goes right down to the wire.
