Paul Merson urges Spurs to buy Raheem Sterling

This window feels as if it may not turn out well for Spurs fans. There was talk of a big cash injection, but so far, there’s nothing close to dynamic. One name that has featured heavily is Raheem Sterling. The former Chelsea star has become a hot topic, especially after he left Chelsea by mutual agreement on January 28, 2026, becoming a free agent…

However, Raheem hadn’t played competitively for around 250 days before his release.

Allegedly, he’s open to a pay cut (previously on approx £325,000/week) to secure regular football, ideally staying in London for family reasons, and prioritising top-level competition like the Champions League.

Reports from late January 2026 (e.g., Daily Mail, CaughtOffside) linked Spurs as one of several clubs (up to eight, including Napoli, Juventus, West Ham, Fulham, Crystal Palace) considering him.

Some sources claimed manager Thomas Frank was “on board” with the idea, seeing Sterling as a short-term boost for an injury-hit attack (with players like Solanke, Kulusevski, and Maddison sidelined at times).

Pundit Paul Merson called it a “no-brainer” on a free transfer, citing his experience, pace, and winning mentality to help Spurs’ slump (they were reportedly around 14th in the Premier League).

Sterling’s versatility as a winger/forward and Premier League pedigree made him an appealing low-risk (no fee) option for depth.

Paul Merson told The Sun:

“I would bring in Sterling. I think it’s a no-brainer on a free transfer. I really do.”

The links fizzled out quickly, and Spurs have moved on without him. If anything changes, it’d be big news, but right now it feels off the table.
