Tottenham are working at a breakneck pace in the transfer market to get some deals over the line, as TeamTalk reports that there is growing optimism in the race to sign one key target.

Spurs have already managed to get several moves over the line with little-to-no delay, a stark departure from the club's methods previously under Daniel Levy.

Jan Paul van Hecke is the latest signing, as he joins Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi in a new-look backline, with the major flaws at the back seemingly sorted for now.

Attention quickly turns towards the midfield, with it being a key position that Tottenham have struggled with over the past year or two.

Sandro Tonali is a priority target, with links continuing over a deal to sign the Italian international from Newcastle United this summer, but he isn't the only player on the radar.

Tottenham Step Up Mateus Fernandes Chase

It's turning out to be one of the most intense chases of the summer transfer window, as Mateus Fernandes is on the radar of several top teams in the market.

Included in that are Tottenham, as recent reports claim that the Lilywhites are keen on a move for the Portuguese international after West Ham failed to avoid relegation from the Premier League.

Now, according to TeamTalk, Spurs are confident of signing Fernandes ahead of their rivals, even with the £80 million valuation slapped on any potential exit from the London Stadium.

The report claims that the move for Fernandes is separate to that of Tonali, opening up the possibility of both players signing this summer as a real statement of intent from the hierarchy.

Recent reports have claimed that personal terms are close to being agreed with the midfielder, leaving club-to-club talks left on the table before a deal can be truly sealed.

It's a move that needs to be handled with care, because of the interest from others in the market. Manchester United appear to be the main rivals for Fernandes, while Real Madrid have also been touted with interest in the 21-year-old.

As things appear to progress towards a deal getting done, Tottenham may solve their rebuild quickly in one swoop.

Tottenham's Midfield Rebuild

Tottenham need to add some on-ball quality to the midfield this summer, having struggled to deal with the progressing the ball out from back to front.

In Fernandes and Tonali, the Lilywhites could have the ideal new pairing to bring a little more class to the central ranks that is required of the team.

The former was described as "elite" for his all-round ability, capable of playing in a deeper role, in a more advanced role, or somewhere in-between the two.

Tonali is similar in that way, though may be best used as a number six or as a number eight, with both players adding exactly what has been missing in the middle.

That all comes without compromising on the physical attributes that Tottenham have tried to build around in recent windows as well, giving them an ideal balance.
