The Premier League has agreed to a request from Tottenham Hotspur to have their match against Aston Villa moved, in light of Spurs being in the driving seat to make the UEFA Europa League final. The match has been brought forward from Sunday, May 18, to Friday, May 16, with the Europa League final held on Wednesday, May 21. Tottenham beat Bodo/Glimt 3-1 in the opening leg of their semi-final.

Tottenham Hotspur’s request to have their Premier League match against Aston Villa moved forward has been granted.

The match was originally scheduled for Sunday, May 18 at 14:15 UK time, but will now be played two days before, on Friday, May 16 at 19:30.

Totteham made the request in light of the possibility that they would be playing in the UEFA Europa League final the following Wednesday.

Spurs lead Bodo/Glimt 3-1 in the first leg of their semi-final, with the second leg due to be played this Thursday, live on TNT Sports and discovery+.

If they make the final, Spurs will have four full days off between matches, as opposed to two.

Villa objected to the move, given that it is set to be their final home match of the season and will no longer be played in a family-friendly afternoon slot.

There is no precedent to move Premier League matches to allow rest for European competitions.

Villa themselves played eight times in April across three competitions, at one point having just two days off between playing Preston North End in the FA Cup and then Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League, before playing again after another two days off.

Villa are also chasing European football for next season - they sit seventh in the table, one point behind Nottingham Forest. Therefore, league results are of huge importance, whereas for Spurs, winning the Europa League title is their only realistic route into Europe for next season.

If Tottenham do make the final of the Europa League, they could play Manchester United, who also won the first leg of their semi-final against Athletic Club.

Man Utd lead 3-0 going into the second leg, which is also played this Thursday, live on TNT Sports and discovery+.

If both English clubs make the final, they will now have the same amount of time to prepare.

Man Utd are due to play Chelsea on Friday, May 16 at 20:15, the same night as the rescheduled Villa and Tottenham clash.

The Europa League final is scheduled for Wednesday, May 21 at 20:00 at San Mames in Bilbao, Spain.
