'Heitinga was a standout candidate'

Tottenham v West Ham (Sat, 15:00 GMT)

Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham Hotspur boss Thomas Frank on the appointment of John Heitinga: "It was a process we did together. Johan [Lange], Fabio [Paratici] and I were the main drivers. He was a standout candidate. He has had a top playing career but I also liked how he did after that in the academy of Ajax and on top of that had two good experiences in the Premier League with West Ham and Liverpool.

"I have met him a few times before and all the character references - he is a top guy, a top football person."

'I only focus on what I can affect'

Tottenham v West Ham (Sat, 15:00 GMT)

Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham Hotspur boss Thomas Frank on how it feels to be under pressure: "For me, I only focus on what I can affect. There is a lot of noise. I know because I've been told and I'm not stupid, we want more good results but I focus on what I can see is actually working and we have to do more of that.

"I know we need to focus on being calm and doing the right thing. If we do that, keep doing the right thing, hopefully because we do more right things - then things will turn."

'I think Gallagher can see the exciting potential in this club'

Tottenham v West Ham (Sat, 15:00 GMT)

Tottenham Hotspur

More from Tottenham Hotspur boss Thomas Frank on Conor Gallagher and why he believes the midfielder chose Spurs: "One thing is the Premier League and the second thing is the project and opportunity here. The role he can get in the team.

"I think first and foremost as a player that can help the team with his abilities and the character he is as well. I think he can see the very exciting potential in this club."

'It is a big derby but it is all about us'

Tottenham v West Ham (Sat, 15:00 GMT)

Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham Hotspur boss Thomas Frank was asked about the significance of Saturday's game: "I am happy to take that [the pressure], - it is all about how we can get the players out there full of confidence to be brave.

"Of course it's a big London derby but it is all about us. Hopefully we can add the first half against Sunderland and the second half against Aston Villa. If we can do that, put a top performance out there, we can win the game."

On whether he needs people to trust him to turn the fortunes of the club around: "Yes. I am very aware how the football world works. I know that we haven't got enough of the results we want. I can see the small steps we are constantly doing and I refer to the last six games as more positive performances - not perfect.

"There is a culture that is getting a little bit stronger and in football, sometimes momentum can change just like that. I can see small signs. The culture. The training. Thursday was very intense and focussed. We are working very hard on the offensive part of our game. It is the offensive we need to do better and that is what we are working hard on."

'Gallagher is exactly what we need'

Tottenham v West Ham (Sat, 15:00 GMT)

Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham Hotspur boss Thomas Frank on the signing of Conor Gallagher: "I think it is a top signing. I can't praise the ownership enough for doing it and getting it over the line quick.

"I think what he brings in terms of ability first and foremost is, he is a very good player with great experience in the Premier League and La Liga. He has captained two teams so that character, leadership and experience - plus he's still young with plenty of development to reach but coming in at a good level.

"His pressing abilities, directness, scoring goals but also being able to find good positions on the pitch is exactly what we need."

Leeds finally get their man

Karan Vinod

BBC Sport Journalist

Leeds United have completed the signing of Facundo Buonanotte on loan from Brighton, with the Argentine midfielder returning to Elland Road after a move that collapsed in the summer transfer window.

The 21-year-old had joined Chelsea on loan earlier this season, but that spell has now been cut short to allow him to make the switch to Leeds as Daniel Farke looks to add creativity in the final third.

The Argentine’s versatility and technical ability will be seen as a good fit for Farke’s system, especially after changing to a back three formation, and Leeds hope the move can provide added attacking impetus during the second half of the season in their push for Premier League survival.

Tottenham no longer cheating xG

Tottenham v West Ham (Sat, 15:00 GMT)

Chris Collinson

BBC football statistician

Two examples of why teams can only cheat their xG for so long are Tottenham Hotspur and Leeds United this season.

Early results misleadingly suggested that Thomas Frank's team were strong Champions League contenders and Daniel Farke's side were in for a long, tough struggle.

But Tottenham's xG was far worse than their points tally implied, while Leeds' was much better.

As the season has gone on, their results (the black line below) have steadily been pulled like a magnet by their xG (the yellow line) and are now more reflective of how they've actually been playing this season.

A week of incomings at Tottenham

Tottenham v West Ham (Sat, 15:00 GMT)

Tottenham Hotspur

It has been a busy week at Tottenham Hotspur with regard to incomings - both on the playing and non-playing staff front.

On the field, Spurs completed their first signing of the January window - bringing in England midfielder Conor Gallagher from Atletico Madrid for a fee of £35m on a five-year deal.

But there has been movement off the field, too.

On Thursday, Carlos Raphael Moersen was appointed as Director of Football Operations.

Details of his arrival come a day after it was confirmed sporting director Fabio Paratici will leave in February to join Fiorentina, although Spurs have said Moersen will fill a newly created role.

And, in the last hour, it was confirmed that former Netherlands defender John Heitinga has joined the team as an assistant coach.

Heitinga started the season in charge of Dutch giants Ajax but was sacked in November following a poor start to the campaign.

Spurs' home record under Frank

Tottenham v West Ham (Sat, 15:00 GMT)

Tottenham Hotspur

A big criticism of Tottenham Hotspur under Thomas Frank, more than anything else, has been their dismal home record.

Since Frank took the reins in the summer, Spurs have won just two games at home in the Premier League.

Two wins from 10 and nine points out of 30 available just simply won't cut it for a club and fanbase that have European aspirations.

Funnily enough, in all competitions the record does improve slightly.

Spurs have got a 100% record on home soil in the Champions League and also beat Doncaster Rovers in the EFL Cup third round, however, they were knocked out in round three of the FA Cup by Aston Villa most recently.

Premier League home record:

Wins: 2

Draws: 3

Losses: 5

All competitions home record:

Wins: 6

Draws: 3

Losses 6

Is Gallagher what Spurs need?

Tottenham v West Ham (Sat, 15:00 GMT)

Chris Adams

BBC Sport journalist

As the halfway point of the transfer window approaches, Tottenham's troubles in attack have come under the microscope. Just one win in six Premier League games sees the north London side 14th in the table, with pressure mounting on head coach Thomas Frank.

Frank's cautious approach has come in for criticism and while the arrival of England international Conor Gallagher from Atletico Madrid will bring proven top-flight pedigree in midfield, the jury is out on whether his attributes are likely to inspire a charge up the table.

This season, Gallagher has scored more goals, taken more shots and completed more passes per 90 minutes than Frank's current midfield options Rodrigo Bentancur, Joao Palhinha, Lucas Bergvall, Xavi Simons, Pape Matar Sarr or Archie Gray.

The ex-Chelsea man's passing accuracy is the best too, but barely one-fifth of his passes are played forward – the lowest percentage among those mentioned. He also ranks below all of those, bar Gray, for carrying the ball over distance and is yet to register an assist this campaign.

With a middling record in terms of through balls and chances created, Spurs fans might rightly ask if the 25-year-old, who has cost £35m, offers enough of a difference from the likes of Sarr or the on-loan Palhinha.

But with a point to prove before Thomas Tuchel names his England World Cup squad, a fired-up Gallagher could still prove a useful asset for the under-fire Frank.

ICYMI: Tottenham sign Gallagher from Atletico for £35m

Tottenham v West Ham (Sat, 15:00 GMT)

On Wednesday, Tottenham Hotspur confirmed the signing of England midfielder Conor Gallagher from Spanish side Atletico Madrid for £35m.

Spurs beat Aston Villa to the 25-year-old's signature, with the former Chelsea player joining on a deal running until 2031.

Gallagher left the Blues for Atletico in August 2024 for about £33m, with Portugal forward Joao Felix - who has since left Chelsea - moving the other way.

Gallagher has 22 caps for England but has played only once under current boss Thomas Tuchel, featuring for 59 minutes in a 3-1 friendly defeat by Senegal.

He will hope a move back to the Premier League and impressing in Thomas Frank's side will boost his chances of making England's squad for this summer's World Cup.
