Tottenham have had an active start to the winter transfer window.

After signing Irish wonderkid Mason Melia on 1 January, Spurs sold Brennan Johnson to Crystal Palace for £35million and have sanctioned new loan deals for Kota Takai, Manor Solomon and Jamie Donley.

On Tuesday, Spurs recalled Alfie Dorrington from his loan spell at Aberdeen and also look set to end Yang Min-hyeok’s temporary stay at Portsmouth so that he can spend the second half of the campaign at Championship leaders Coventry.

While Melia’s arrival means Spurs have signed someone this winter, it’s likely the teenager will star in the club’s youth sides instead, leaving Thomas Frank with work to do to improve his options.

And improve them he must, with Frank under increasing pressure due to Tottenham’s poor Premier League results this season.

Tottenham ready new bid for Santos wonderkid Souza

Tottenham have already had one bid rejected for left-back Souza by Santos this month.

According to The Athletic, Spurs had an offer of £8m batted away by the Brazilian giants, with the 19-year-old possessing a mammoth £87.1m release clause in his contract.

However, the Londoners haven’t given up on signing Souza yet.

An update by Brazilian journalist Eduardo Burgos on Tuesday suggested that Tottenham are lining up a new bid, worth “almost double the first one” that Spurs submitted at the beginning of the winter transfer window.

It is understood that Souza has also accepted Tottenham’s proposal after a project was presented to him bu the Premier League club’s recruitment chiefs.

Burgos adds that Souza “likes the option of playing in the Premier League and living in London“.

Souza made 29 appearances for Santos in the 2025 Brazilian season, scoring one goal and supplying two assists.

Who could make way if Tottenham sign Souza?

As it stands, Spurs’ left-back options are Destiny Udogie and Djed Spence.

Frank has opted to play Spence a lot more this season, handing the former Leeds loanee 26 appearances across all competitions and starting him in 15 out of 20 Premier League fixtures.

Udogie‘s injury issues have meant that he’s only played 15 times in total, starting six times in the league.

Tottenham’s left-back options:

It would be pretty crazy for Spurs to see Souza as a replacement for either of these two left-back options, which suggests that the Brazilian teenager could be either stuck in the Under-21s, or sent out on loan.

Tottenham also have Micky van de Ven and Ben Davies, who can fill in at left-back if needed. However, the latter of those two is expected to leave the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this year.
