Richard Keys is already speculating that Thomas Frank could be sacked by Tottenham before long on the basis of Saturday’s defeat to Chelsea.

Tottenham were beaten 1-0 by Chelsea on home soil in what was a terrible display as their poor form at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium goes on.

Frank appeared upset by the conduct of Micky van de Ven and Djed Spence at full-time, with the defeat leaving Spurs fifth in the Premier League.

There is no doubt Frank has issues to deal with at Tottenham, with a home clash against Copenhagen next up in the Champions League on Tuesday.

And in the view of TV presenter Keys, Frank cannot afford a repeat of the performance against Chelsea if he is to stay in the job.

MORE SPURS STORIES

Daniel Levy hired Thomas Frank for exciting football

Daniel Levy was the chairman at the time of Frank’s appointment in the summer, with the Dane joining from London rivals Brentford.

Levy’s Tottenham exit was considered a positive for Frank, who would have been appointed for his exciting brand of football at the Gtech.

The football has been anything but exciting at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium so far, however, and that could be cause for concern for Frank.

Writing on his personal blog on Monday, Keys said: “Question. Why did Tottenham employ Thomas Frank? Answer. Because he’d done really well at Brentford. Fair?

“There might be other reasons, but predominantly it had to be because of what Daniel Levy had seen on the pitch. And what was that? Well, Frank had served up straight forward, no nonsense football.

“Spurs were hopeless on Saturday – laborious, predictable and offered little or nothing. On the other hand Chelsea were vibrant. They hunted everything down, not giving Spurs a moment to think. They looked more like a Frank Brentford team.

“Has Frank got the Spursy bug already? Has he become overawed by the tradition and history of Tottenham? I hope not because if he has he’ll go the same way as the 14 coaches Daniel Levy hired and fired before his departure. Just keep it simple, Thomas. Do what you know best.“

Keys has a point, as although Spurs have also had some encouraging results this season, fans are not interested in slow football that does not generate results – as was the case against Chelsea.

The widespread boos may have sounded harsh to those on the outside, but Tottenham fans know what they want, and this isn’t it.

Copenhagen match a chance for Tottenham to put on a show

Frank is fully aware of what is expected of him at Tottenham. Exciting football and positive results are a must.

That might be asking a lot, but that is what taking on such a high-profile job entails. As Keys says, Frank was hired over a number of other candidates for a reason.

Tuesday’s clash with Copenhagen presents a chance for Frank to send his players out to attack and hopefully get a few goals to build confidence.

Spurs’ record at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium has been underwhelming for far too long now, and turning the tide is going to be key to Spurs getting things back on track under Frank.
