Rodrigo Bentancur’s contract situation has been causing plenty of concern at Tottenham in recent weeks.

The Uruguay international has become an increasingly important member of the squad in N17 over the last few seasons, but his future is now shrouded in uncertainty.

Bentancur’s contract at Tottenham is due to expire at the end of the current campaign, and there is currently no sign of him penning renewed terms with the Lilywhites.

Thomas Frank’s side have had a hugely positive summer in the transfer market, but this is one issue that they have been unable to tackle.

This article includes exclusive comments from Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham.

Tottenham ‘have to close’ Rodrigo Bentancur deal quickly

Bentancur could agree to leave Tottenham as soon as January if they do not address the impending situation regarding his contract in the near future.

The 28-year-old will be able to strike a pre-contract agreement with European clubs in the winter, and that will be a huge concern for Spurs, given that Atletico Madrid have been showing an interest.

Bentancur has already turned in several impressive performances so far this season, and his importance to the Lilywhites is clearer than ever.

Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – believes that the N17 outfit simply have to reach an agreement with their star, but money could be a potential barrier.

“We (Tottenham) want him to stay,” Wenham said.

“You can imagine the likes of Atletico Madrid and others will be fully aware of that situation, that they can sign him on a free in less than three months.

“We have to close that deal. “I’m surprised that it hasn’t happened as yet, but he’s probably holding out for his money.

“The more performances that he puts in, like he did at Man City, against PSG and in the pre-season friendlies, the more his value increases, and he probably wants a decent contract.”

Spurs need to give Rodrigo Bentancur the terms he wants

Bentancur’s situation at Tottenham is growing graver with every passing day, as concerns regarding a possible exit continue to mount.

The midfielder is now a veteran in European football, and a player of his age is unlikely to carry much value in the transfer market from now until the end of his career.

With that in mind, it is solely down to Spurs to assess how much they need him for the next few seasons.

Frank is clearly keen on him, given that he has started him in three of the four competitive games during his reign so far.

Spurs have shown this summer in the transfer market that money is of little concern to them, and with that in mind, they surely have to pay Bentancur the sum that he wants in order to keep him around.
