Tottenham have received an approach from Ligue 1 side Monaco for midfielder Pape Matar Sarr, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Sarr has likely fallen down the pecking order at Spurs following the arrivals of Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes in the summer transfer window.

Roberto De Zerbi also gave Lucas Bergvall a start against Brentford in the Premier League, while Conor Gallagher was also in the XI.

Rodrigo Bentancur

James Maddison

Spurs have plenty of options in the middle of the park now, which could make it difficult for Sarr to cement himself as a regular starter.

Sarr was regularly involved for Spurs last season in all competitions, but he was far from a guaranteed starter for the North London club.

With further competition in the midfield, it's going to be incredibly difficult for Sarr. It wouldn't be a surprise if he was interested in a move away from the club this summer.

According to Italian journalist Romano, Ligue 1 side AS Monaco have now made an approach to Sarr's camp over a potential loan move.

Discussions have taken place over the project at Monaco and a potential salary, but it's unclear if they've made club-to-club contact.

De Zerbi has recently come out and backed Sarr, labelling him a crucial player during pre-season.

“Bentancur is a crucial player for us, just like Pape Sarr."

Although Sarr wasn't involved against Brentford at the weekend, De Zerbi did confirm that he has suffered a small hamstring injury, which ruled him out.

It's going to be an interesting week when it comes to the future of Sarr, as it certainly wouldn't be a surprise if all parties were happy to part ways.

Sarr could still have Tottenham future

Although Tottenham have a bloated midfield at the moment, there's no reason why Sarr can't have a long-term future at the club.

The midfielder only signed a new contract back in 2024, keeping him tied down till 2030.

With four years remaining on his deal, Sarr could go out on loan and impress, coming back a better player ready to push for regular first-team action.

Whether that will happen remains to be seen, but there is certainly no reason why he can't still have a career at Spurs despite potentially heading out on loan.
