Fabrizio Romano has given his verdict on the likelihood of Tottenham Hotspur signing Cody Gakpo and told GIVEMESPORT's Market Madness what needs to happen for a deal to take place.
Gakpo has emerged as one of two attacking targets Roberto De Zerbi has in mind to freshen up his frontline and is particularly focusing on the wing. A move for Manchester City's Savinho remains a possibility and GIVEMESPORT sources understand that there is confidence that a deal will be agreed for the Brazilian.
Spurs have already been busy in this summer's transfer window and haven't been afraid to splash the cash to help De Zerbi guide the team back into European qualification contention. Having already forked out £237 million on six new signings, Romano has suggested they could be looking at making a 'big financial proposal' to land Gakpo before the window closes.

Gakpo's situation at Liverpool is of interest amid the Reds' pursuit of Paris Saint-Germain's Bradley Barcola. They have reportedly agreed on an £110m fee with the Ligue 1 giants to sign the French winger.
That could jeopardise Gakpo's game time at Anfield and as a result he might be the one to make way for Barcola. During his appearance on GIVEMESPORT's Market Madness podcast, Romano gave an update on the situation and whether the Lilywhites are likely to sign the Dutchman:
"For Gakpo, I think it really depends on the financial package because Liverpool never wanted to sell Gakpo. It's never been a priority this summer, so they're very happy with Gakpo, and so is Andoni Iraola and the board. So if a big proposal financially arrives and if the player is keen on the move, Liverpool could consider this possibility."
Gakpo has been at Anfield since January 2023 when he arrived from PSV Eindhoven. He has proven to be effective thanks to his versatility, able to play on the left as well as up front.
While the 27-year-old didn't enjoy the best of seasons last time out, Romano stressed that the Anfield chiefs haven't been looking to move him on:
"Otherwise, they are not desperate to sell Gakpo. So that's why the situation is at the moment I would say 50-50. But Tottenham are trying, Tottenham are there, Tottenham are talking with the agents. So I think there is still a chance to see this and good chances to see this happening."

The ball may well be in Gakpo's court regarding a move to Spurs, especially if the North Londoners do make an attractive offer to Liverpool. He might relish the chance to take up more of a superstar role in De Zerbi's team rather than compete with Barcola for a starting berth under Iraola.

When talk of Spurs making another 'bomba' signing surfaced last week, their fans dreamed of a marquee name. Does Gakpo fit that billing? Not quite, but he can definitely improve De Zerbi's team on the attacking front.
Mohamed Salah once pointed out how Gakpo's contributions often go under the radar at Liverpool. He told AstroSuperSport back in 2024:
“Cody doesn’t get credit because the fans, I don’t know if they really understand his game or not. But he is a very, very clever player. I admire the way he thinks; it’s very, very good. He is young and wants to learn; he asks a lot of questions.”
That description is spot on given Gakpo's ability to thrive on the left wing and centrally; it does feel as though he's one of those players whom fans haven't fully taken to. He has a decent goalscoring record, and when he's at full confidence, he is a real nuisance for opposition defenders.
What might prove to be a problem for Spurs' higher-ups is not only the need to make a big offer for the player. He is purportedly earning £250,000 per week at Anfield, which means he'll likely be demanding a similar salary to join the Lilywhites.

De Zerbi could be the ideal manager to get the Dutch attacker playing to the best of his ability. He's an experienced winger who has a Premier League title win to his name and, depending on the fee, might prove to be one of the signings of the season.
