Wrexham could still look to complete an audacious move for Tottenham Hotspur defender Ben Davies in the coming months, according to reports - despite the Welsh international having his contract extended by the north London club late last week.
Davies was out of contract at Tottenham at the end of the month, which would have brought an end to his 11-year stay in the capital - but the club triggered their option to extend his contract until June 2026, initially ruling Wrexham out of a fairytale move. However, a report has stated that it hasn't deterred Phil Parkinson's men and a deal could still be looked at later in the year for the Champions League star.
Sky Sports: Wrexham Still Keen on Ben Davies Deal
The Welsh outfit could look to bring one of the country's most capped players
The report by Sky Sports reporter Anthony Joseph states that Wrexham are still keen on signing Tottenham centre-back Davies as their rapid rise through the English Football League continues at a blistering pace.
Reports over the weekend from Sky Sports stated that the Championship outfit were in talks with Davies over a potential marquee signing, but Sunday evening saw Tottenham trigger the one-year extension on his estimated £80,000-a-week contract to keep him at the club for another season.
But the report has revealed that Davies' contract being extended until next summer hasn't put them off making him one of their major signings, with Hollywood owners Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds keen on securing a record-breaking four-consecutive promotions from the fifth-tier to the Premier League.
The sticking point is that any deal would now require a fee, and the north Welsh outfit may have to wait until Brentford boss Thomas Frank arrives and adds more players to his defensive ranks before Davies becomes an available option.
Davies came into Swansea City's squad in the 2012-13 campaign, spending two seasons at left-back for the Liberty Stadium outfit before making the move to Tottenham - and although he's largely been a squad option in north London, he's still managed to make 242 appearances in the top-flight for the Lilywhites, as well as an extra 116 in other competitions - including the Europa League, where Tottenham beat Manchester United in the final to end a 17-year wait for silverware.
GIVEMESPORT Key Statistic: Ben Davies has made 313 Premier League appearances - with only Robbie Savage, Gary Speed and Ryan Giggs ahead of him in terms of Welshmen.
A further 95 caps for Wales means that he's an extremely distinguished member of their squad and Wrexham fans would herald his signing as they aim to make the step-up to the top-flight for the first time in their history.
