Tottenham Hotspur are close to an agreement with midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur over a new long-term contract, GMS understands.

The 28-year-old Uruguayan's current deal expires next summer, but all parties expect an extension to be finalised this month.

Bentancur has proven important to new Spurs head coach Thomas Frank, starting eight of the 10 matches under him.

Bentancur Holding Positive Discussions Over Fresh Terms

GMS understands talks between Bentancur, who is currently on a deal which allows him to pocket an initial £75,000-per-week before bonuses, and influential figures at Tottenham over fresh terms ramped up after the summer transfer window slammed shut last month and have gone smoothly to date.

The central midfielder was also key under then-boss Ange Postecoglou as Spurs won the Europa League last season, starting and finishing the quarter-final, both legs of the semi-final and victory over Manchester United in the final.

Tottenham also added another number six this summer in Joao Paulinha, and are already inclined to take up the €30m option to buy him from Bundesliga heavyweights Bayern Munich at the end of his initial loan spell.

It remains to be seen whether they will simply trigger that clause, or try to negotiate a lower number, but Frank has been impressed with the Portugal international so far and wants him to stay in north London.

Paulinha is also keen to remain on board beyond this season and also made that clear when the deal was first negotiated.

The feeling within Tottenham is that Bentancur and Paulinha are already an effective partnership in a 4-2-3-1 formation. That's why the former is set to be rewarded with fresh terms.

Bentancur is now set to become the second senior Spurs player to pen a new deal in recent months after new club captain Cristian Romero agreed a four-year contract in August.
