Tottenham have been handed fresh hope in their bid to land Liverpool veteran Andy Robertson this month. Spurs have been battling to sign the Scotland international on a cheap deal this month, hoping to pay now to avoid competition for a free transfer this summer, when the defender is due to run out of contract at Anfield.

Stuck in the bottom half, Tottenham need help if they are going to make a run for Europe, and particularly in the wake of several injury blows over recent weeks.

Tottenham have lost Ben Davies, Rodrigo Bentancur, Mohammed Kudus and Richarlison all for two months with the exception of the former, who will be out for three. Those absences certainly won’t help Frank as he looks to turn around what has been a disappointing season so far.

The Conor Gallagher signing will help, but Spurs know they need more new signings, with offensive signings like a priority. Meanwhile, efforts to land Robertson continue, with Spurs said to be hopeful over a £5million deal, .

Robertson has been open about wanting more game time having largely been a bench player this season. The full-back will want to go in the World Cup in good form this summer, and regular football will allow him to do that.

Given his contract situation, a deal could well be on the cards this month, but Liverpool need to replace Robertson before sanctioning a deal.

Spurs given lifeline

Amid talk of the Robertson deal stalling, there is now fresh hope for Tottenham due to Liverpool making progress over the recall of the out on loan Kostas Tsimikas. Asked about the recall on Sunday, AS Roma chief Ricky Massara said: “It’s true, we are in talks with Liverpool about that.”

A Tsimikas return could be the domino Tottenham need to fall to be able to pull off the Robertson deal. What doesn’t help Spurs is that Liverpool are also having a disappointing season, now outside the top four, and the under-pressure Arne Slot won’t want to make any missteps with his squad at this stage.

Asked over the weekend about the possibility of Robertson leaving in this window, Liverpool boss Slot said: “What do you think my answer is going to be? Have I ever said anything about transfers in front of these microphones? My answer is always the same and it's quite boring to always give the same answer... we don't talk about transfers in public.”
