Injured Cristian Romero will not be in attendance to watch Tottenham’s titanic battle vs. Everton on the final day of the season.

Tottenham Hotspur are still not safe from relegation to the Championship when they take on Everton on Sunday in the final match of the 2025/26 Premier League season.

It is going to be a nervy day for the fans and everyone associated with the North London club, as Roberto De Zerbi and Co. look to avoid being a laughing stock on the final day of the campaign. Amid Tottenham’s preparations for arguably the biggest game of the club’s rich history, Cristian Romero has created headlines for the wrong reasons.

Cristin Romero, who is currently nursing a knee injury, will be in his homeland on Sunday afternoon to attend the final of the Argentine Championship between Belgrano and River Plate. The Tottenham captain’s decision to skip the Everton showdown and travel 7000 miles to watch his boyhood club in action has angered the fanbase.

Tottenham will be without Cristian Romero in the stands against the Toffees, and his decision to skip it has rightly seen the Spurs skipper get backlash from the fans, media and the pundits.

Now, former Manchester City manager Stuart Pearce has given his verdict on the controversy surrounding the Argentine. He has slated Romero for jetting out to his homeland instead of staying in North London to provide support to his Spurs teammates in the relegation battle.

“It stinks. If you are a Tottenham fan, and your captain is thousands of miles away, wow,” Stuart Pearce said on the TalkSPORT show.

“There’s a statement there that says, “I ain’t got you in this problem; it ain’t my fault.” That’s what that statement sends out to me. It’s not good.”

Roberto De Zerbi breaks silence on Cristian Romero’s absence

Speaking in his pre-match press conference on Friday afternoon, De Zerbi confirmed that Romero will not return to England ahead of the weekend’s titanic fixture. He added that the defender, after talks with the medical staff, decided to go to Argentina to complete his rehab on a knee injury.

The 28-year-old has been out injured since the Sunderland clash in mid-April, but he is supposed to be with his teammates for moral support. That’s what leaders generally do when they cannot influence games on the pitch, and this is the bare minimum the fans expect from their skipper. Instead, he is expected to be cheering his boyhood club Belgrano against River Plate in a title decider.

With his latest antics, Romero surely has sealed his Tottenham fate. De Zerbi needs true leadership, which is displayed through right actions, and the Argentina international has further proven that he is not the man to drive the club forward on the pitch or off it.
