Tottenham Hotspur are eyeing a shock move to sign Real Madrid star Federico Valverde in the January transfer window, according to Fichajes.net.
Thomas Frank's side have had a strong start to the season so far after adding all of Mohammed Kudus, Joao Palhinha, Xavi Simons and Randal Kolo Muani to the squad this summer, and currently sit fourth in the Premier League table.
But with some issues in the midfield area with fitness and the way they fit into the manager's plans, the club are now plotting ways to strengthen even further and could look to bring in a superstar to do so.
Tottenham Prioritise Move for Valverde
Valverde, who has been described as a 'superstar', has come under criticism for his performances this season under new manager Xabi Alonso, and that has led to speculation that the Spanish giants could look to move him on in the winter transfer window.
Now Tottenham are eyeing the Uruguayan powerhouse as a 'priority' transfer target in January, as they look to make a statement move once again following the departure of Daniel Levy as chairman.
The north London club want to add muscle and quality to their midfield department, and the report from Spain suggests that the club would be willing to invest a 'significant sum' to bring Valverde, who currently earns around £345,000-a-week, in for Frank.
It's also understood that the player would be more open to a move to the Premier League than in recent years due to the physicality and pace of the league, with his place in Alonso's side under severe threat due to the style of play the former Liverpool and Bayern Munich star wants to implement at the Bernabeu.
Tottenham have held preliminary talks about a move and the player would prioritise a move to England over anywhere else if he were to leave Real Madrid, but his wish currently is to find a way to establish himself back as a key player for the 14-time European champions.
Should his situation not improve between now and the new year, then he will have a decision and the temptation of the Premier League could be too much for him to ignore.
