Thomas Frank was in a buoyant mood despite Tottenham Hotspur's defeat to Paris Saint-Germain on penalties in the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday. The Dane insisted that Spurs proved they were capable of taking on "any team in the world". Spurs squandered a 2-0 lead, as PSG scored in the 85th and 94th minutes to take the game to a shootout, which the UEFA Champions League holders won.

Thomas Frank insists that Tottenham Hotspur are capable of going up "against any team in the world" despite their defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup on penalties.

Spurs led UEFA Champions League holders PSG 2-0, after Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero each claimed a set-piece goal for the Premier League side either side of half-time.

However, PSG, who had only returned to pre-season training a week ago, finally breached the Spurs defence through substitute Lee Kang-in in the 85th minute, before Goncalo Ramos' 94th-minute header sent the game to penalties.

Tottenham ‘better team by far’ against PSG, have created ‘template’ for success

While the French giants went on to win the shootout 4-3 and claim the first available silverware of the campaign, Spurs boss Frank was in a buoyant mood after the game.

"I think in one game we showed we can go up against any team in the world," the Dane told TNT Sports. "I have no doubt we can do that and that’s the positive we’ll take from it."

He continued: "We played a very good game. We played against one of the best teams in the world, maybe the best in the world at this moment in time.

"But I think we had them exactly where we wanted them for 80-something minutes - until the goal to make it 2-1.

"And then, of course, there was a shift in momentum but there were so many positives. I’m so proud of the team, the club, and the fans.

"There’s so much to be happy with. It’s a flip of a coin when you go into a penalty shoot-out."

Frank went on to praise his side’s committed defensive performance, as well as their ability to capitalise from two set pieces.

The former Brentford boss continued: "I think we showed that we could be adaptable and pragmatic because that’s what we needed to be against a team like PSG.

"I think the way we wanted to defend - both high pressure and low defending was exceptionally good. I think the first half was top - almost perfect.

"And also the set pieces were very good and very dangerous. Set pieces are key. For any team it should be a weapon in my opinion. We definitely want to focus on it because I think it’s a key area."

Luis Enrique: It was a miracle PSG won

PSG boss Luis Enrique conceded that Spurs were the better team in Udine, adding that it was a "miracle" that his side were able to snatch the victory.

"For 80 minutes we didn’t deserve that," Enrique told TNT Sports. "I think Tottenham deserved to win the match.

"We could feel they were in form, we could feel they had been training for six weeks. They played a great match.

"But we had been training for only six days and sometimes football is unfair. I have to say that we were very lucky that in the last ten minutes we could score two goals.

"My players had faith until the last minute, as did the supporters, but football is unpredictable and in that sense I have to say we were very lucky."

The Spaniard added: "It's difficult to play the way we want to play if you don’t train and don’t have the time to train. I have to say it was a miracle."
