It’s been a difficult period for Tottenham Hotspur, that goes without saying.

Spurs sit 14th in the Premier League, Thomas Frank is under serious pressure, and with just hours to go in the transfer window, it doesn’t look like any further signings are set to arrive.

Conor Gallagher joined the club earlier this month, while Souza also arrived from Santos, but it still feels like Spurs are short.

Tottenham need more creativity, and speaking on Sky Sports, Tim Sherwood has suggested that there’s a midfield signing Spurs should have made in this window.

Indeed, Sherwood says that if it was up to him, he would have signed Angel Gomes, but the England international seems set for Wolves instead.

Tim Sherwood says Tottenham should have gone for Angel Gomes

Sherwood spoke about Tottenham’s transfer dealings, claiming that he would have taken Angel Gomes at Spurs if it was up to him.

The pundit noted that there are too many runners in the Tottenham midfield and not enough guile, claiming that Gomes would bring something different to help Thomas Frank’s side.

“I would have took Angel Gomes, I really would, from Marseille. I would have brought him. He’s going to go on loan to Wolves. I think he’d be exactly what Tottenham need, a bit of control, a bit of guile, a player who wants to pass the ball forward in the midfield area. They have not got that. They’ve got a lot of runners who run around the pitch,” Sherwood said.

Tottenham’s midfield options analysed

Sherwood may not have been the most successful Tottenham manager in history, but he’s certainly talking sense here.

Whether or not Angel Gomes is the answer is up for debate, but Tottenham certainly need more creativity in the midfield.

As things stand, Tottenham have plenty of physicality and energy in the midfield, but there is a real lack of a playmaker or someone who can create something out of nothing.

Spurs’ midfield is a problem in terms of progressing the ball, and that is something Tottenham need to address as quickly as they can.
