Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea were both handed the same problem over the opening weekend of the Premier League, and there is one obvious solution for both sides.
Spurs were thrashed 3-0 by Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday evening in a stark reality check for hopes that Roberto De Zerbi's side would compete at the opposite end of the table. Meanwhile, Chelsea recorded a 3-2 derby win over Fulham under the lights at Craven Cottage on Monday night.
Despite the differing fortunes of the London sides, both Xabi Alonso and De Zerbi will be scratching their heads over goalkeeping options going into the final two weeks of the transfer window.
Antonin Kinsky fumbles in Tottenham goal
Spurs allowed Guglielmo Vicario to join Juventus on loan this season, putting faith in 23-year-old Antonin Kinsky. It had already been a topsy-turvy start to life in North London for the shot-stopper, who helped the side to Europa League triumph but was then famously subbed after just 17 minutes in a Champions League clash with Atletico Madrid.
A clear run as number one this season looked to be a fresh start, but Kinsky looked unsteady at Brentford. The goalkeeper, who has just signed a new contract, was at fault for the Bees' second goal, fumbling a shot into the path of Vitaly Janelt.
It may only be the first match of the campaign, but De Zerbi can surely see the writing on the wall. Martin Dubravka has arrived as a back-up, but it's impossible to see the 37-year-old as a first choice if Spurs do truly hope to fight for a place in the top six.
Robert Sanchez endures poor start to Premier League season
It's a similar story over at Stamford Bridge. The win over Fulham was convincing, but the performance from Robert Sanchez in between the sticks was not.
The Spaniard has earned a reputation for his high-profile mistakes and looked flappy early on at the Cottage. It didn't take long for a Josh King shot to find its way under Sanchez from distance, in a shot which a goalkeeper would be expected to save.
Enzo Maresca spent much of his tenure at Chelsea insisting that he was happy with Sanchez in goal and, so far this summer, the club's stance has remained the same.
It is, however, the elephant in the room for Alonso between now and Deadline Day. Speaking on Monday Night Football, Gary Neville said: "They've added an experienced player in key positions, I don't know if Emi Martinez is available but someone like that needs to come in.
"That will undermine everything they do. Everything positive for Fulham came through Sanchez giving them the goal, their best periods after the goals and both were poor mistakes. He's patting him on the back but it's a problem."
Emi Martinez looking to leave Aston Villa
Indeed, Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez looks the perfect solution for both clubs, with Spurs also linked in recent days. The 'world-class' Argentine is expected to leave Villa Park, with Unai Emery preferring new arrival Zion Suzuki and Marco Bizot.
The Villans came close to agreeing a deal with Juventus for the player, but a move collapsed at the final hurdle as the clubs struggled to agree on a fee.
Now, according to David Ornstein on Wednesday, Chelsea have been offered the Argentina international and are considering signing him.
What both London sides need is an experienced goalkeeper, with the ability to stay out of the headlines. Martinez certainly is that. The 33-year-old has 228 Premier League appearances to his name and a calm demeanour that evades Kinsky and Sanchez.
The goalkeeper is there for the taking in the window, but will either Chelsea or Spurs swallow their pride and get the deal done first?
