Tottenham Hotspur are preparing for their first season under new boss Thomas Frank and the north London side will feel that their summer transfer business is not done just yet.

An unfortunate ACL injury to James Maddison in pre-season has left Spurs in a difficult position as we enter the final stretch of the transfer window. Frank may feel that creative reinforcements are needed as he aims to drag his players up from their shock 17th-placed finish last campaign which was juxtaposed by Europa League glory against Manchester United.

Mohammed Kudus has already been brought in for £55million from West Ham United while a deal for Morgan Gibbs-White fell through, which makes the situation surrounding Maddison all the more frustrating. Manchester City winger Savinho has emerged as a surprise target in recent days after an initial £43m bid was rejected, while Spurs may yet return for a top transfer target with whom they were heavily linked earlier in the window.

Tottenham ‘back in talks’ with Eberechi Eze

According to reports by Fabrizio Romano on X, Spurs are ‘back in talks’ with long-standing target Eberechi Eze, who may still depart Crystal Palace this summer despite playing a role in the Eagles’ Community Shield victory against Liverpool.

Romano said: “Understand Tottenham are also back in talks for Eberechi Eze in separate deal from Savinho. Spurs trying again for Eze while they work on Savinho, following Maddison injury and Son exit. Eze keen but deal depends on Palace as release clause expired.”

In a follow-up, he added in another post on X: “Eberechi Eze, keen on Tottenham move as Palace are informed of his desire to play Champions League football. Deal now depends on club to club talks but Spurs are seriously working on it.”

Eze previously had a £68m release clause within his deal at Palace, which Spurs and arch-rivals Arsenal both explored paying earlier in the summer. The clause recently expired, meaning there is no guarantee the Eagles allow their star player to depart, though both north London clubs will hope they can negotiate down a transfer fee below the original price if the player requests a move.

The Guardian has reported that Arsenal’s interest is still current but the Gunners “need to make sales in attack before pressing ahead with their pursuit of the England international.”

Eze and Savinho moves could make Spurs top-four contenders

Following last season’s struggles, it is paramount that Spurs take advantage of this summer and the pull of Champions League football to build a squad capable of challenging for a return to Europe’s top table once again.

Particularly when playing on several fronts, squad competition is important and Spurs saw several injuries in key positions last season which left their squad threadbare around the mid-point of the season. The signings of Eze and Savinho would not only directly improve Spurs’ starting XI and replace Son and Maddison, they would result in a squad brimming with competition when the likes of Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski return from injury.

Eze brings a flair and directness through the centre of the park which is rare to find and very difficult to stop. Also capable of operating from the left, the England international could be just the spark Spurs need to inspire an exciting year on the pitch for Frank’s side.

Meanwhile, Savinho has immense potential at the age of just 21 and became one of Manchester City’s chief creators with 13 assists in his first season at the club. There is no doubt he could combine effortlessly with Eze to create endless chances for the likes of Dominic Solanke, Kudus and Brennan Johnson. These would be two statement signings if Spurs can get them done and ensure they are in the picture to get back into the Champions League.
