Son Heung-min’s future at Tottenham has been up in the air.

The South Korean winger has arguably earned legend status during his ten years in North London, although his form has dipped in the last couple of years.

Son, 32, has one year left on his contract, and there have been discussions at Spurs surrounding the benefits of selling their captain.

Tottenham have reportedly allowed Son to decide on his own future, and it’s believed he has decided what he wants to do.

Son decides he wants one more year at Tottenham

Son had previously been linked with a move to the United States to play for LAFC.

MORE SPURS STORIES

However, Football Asian (4 July) reports that he has now decided to remain at Tottenham for the new season.

Son is keen to compete in the UEFA Super Cup match against Paris Saint-Germain in August, and wants to lead out Spurs in the Champions League.

He is expected to report back to Tottenham in the coming days to discuss the coming season with Thomas Frank. This discussion will entail how he and the club should approach the final year of his contract.

Son’s decision to stay means Tottenham – and indeed Frank – can finally move on with other transfer business now they know he is set to stay.

Tottenham will benefit from keeping Son for one more year

There’s a strong argument for Tottenham to cash in on Son during this summer.

The Lilywhites have just received a huge financial injection having qualified for the Champions League and are targeting some exciting new wingers in this transfer window.

Meanwhile, they’d be unlikely to attract a higher transfer fee for him in the future. He’s not the world-class player he was two or three years ago, and he’d be available to leave for free next summer unless he signs a new contract.

Even so, there are many benefits to keeping him around.

For starters, Tottenham are short of players with Champions League experience and Son will be keen to prove he’s not ‘finished’ at the highest level.

On top of that, he can be a huge influence on the club’s younger attacking players like Archie Gray, Mikey Moore or Lucas Bergvall.

The amount of money he makes from merchandise sales in South Korea will also be a consideration.

So, while it’s not done and dusted yet, fans would have plenty of reasons to celebrate another year of Sonny at Spurs.
