Tottenham have rekindled their interest in a Serie A midfielder.
It has been widely reported that Tottenham Hotspur have reached a verbal agreement to sign Andy Robertson on a free transfer from Liverpool. Despite Juventus trying to hijack the deal, Robertson wants to join Roberto De Zerbi’s forces at White Hart Lane.
The North Londoners have a long-term interest in the Scotland skipper and tried to sign him in the winter transfer window. However, Liverpool’s failure to find an adequate replacement forced the 32-year-old to stay put. Spurs were also interested in signing central midfielders in the previous transfer window. They succeeded in bringing in Conor Gallagher from Atletico Madrid, but owing to injuries to Rodrigo Bentancur and Lucas Bergvall, the Hotspur Way chiefs wanted to add another body in the middle of the park.
Tottenham were linked with a move for Inter Milan midfielder Davide Frattesi in the January transfer window. The Italian international wanted to leave Inter Milan in search of regular minutes. He couldn’t break into Cristian Chivu’s side throughout the campaign, starting just three of 22 Serie A games. However, eventually a move did not materialise, and he stayed put at Inter Milan.
Tottenham revive interest in Davide Frattesi
According to a report from Italian outlet FC Inter News, Tottenham have revived their interest in Davide Frattesi. They are set to face competition from Nottingham Forest, Atalanta, Juventus and AS Roma for the 26-year-old’s signing in the summer.
Frattesi’s exit from Inter looks inevitable after he fell down the pecking order under Chivu this past season. The report adds that the Nerazzurri are demanding around €25m for the attacking midfielder, whose contract at the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium expires in 2028. So, this is the Serie A champions’ best time to sell him.
The 34-cap Italian international has volumes of experience in Serie A. He has racked up 22 goals and 10 assists in 154 appearances. whilst having represented top clubs such as Sassuolo, Empoli, AC Monza and Inter. Predominantly a No.10, Frattesi can operate in multiple positions across midfield, but his strengths lie in crashing the box with his late runs and scoring goals.
This is somewhat of a similar profile to Conor Gallagher. The England international struggled in a deeper role initially at Spurs, failing to influence games. De Zerbi used him mostly as a secondary striker and got the best out of Gallagher across the last seven games of the season. And with James Maddison expected to work hard during the pre-season tour to get back to full fitness, and Dejan Kulusevski returning from a serious knee injury too, Spurs must avoid signing Frattesi.
Instead, the North Londoners must look to spend on a controlling midfielder who’d fit well in De Zerbi’s system.
