We’re little under a month into the 2026/27 Premier League season, and the table is starting to shape up nicely after a frantic opening four gameweeks. Arsenal and Manchester City are already racing away at the top of the table, four clubs still haven’t managed to win a game, and Crystal Palace have managed to concede a whopping eleven goals already.
Meanwhile, thought is already starting to turn towards the summer transfer window, as clubs look to get the business done that they were unable to during the post-season break. Everton are after a new left-back and a striker, Chelsea need a midfielder after failing to replace Enzo Fernandez, and Man United are in dire need of some reinforcements in defence.
Today’s rumours round-up gets underway at Arsenal, who are flying high at the top of Premier League with four wins from their opening four matches. The reigning champions didn’t have the most satisfactory of summers, however, and are still on the hunt for a high profile signing on the left wing. They failed in attempts to land the likes of Morgan Rogers, Bradley Barcola and Vinicius Junior during the last transfer window.
According to a fresh report from Team Talk, the Gunners are now looking to reignite their interest in Real Madrid star Rodrygo. The Brazil international is making a rapid recovery from an ACL injury suffered back in March, and the report claims he’s back on Arsenal’s shortlist. It’s also suggested that the north London side are in regular contact with the player’s entourage, and that they could make their move as early as January.
The 3AM Verdict: For all their success on the field, Arsenal made a real hash of trying to bag a left-sided forward over the summer. Rodrygo is a top quality player with his best years ahead of him, but it would be a major risk for the Gunners to leap in and sign him in January without first seeing how well he’s recovered from his major injury over a decent period of time.
Austrian wonderkid on Aston Villa’s radar
Next up, we’re off to Villa Park, where Aston Villa are experiencing considerably different fortunes so far this season. They lie 19th in the Premier League table with one draw and three losses from their opening four matches, after a tumultuous summer saw a number of key players leave to join their Premier League rivals.
Caught Offside now say that the Villans are ready to battle the likes of Brighton and Arsenal to sign Sturm Graz midfielder Luca Weinhandl in the January window. The 17-year-old’s dazzling performances in Austria are said to have caught the attention of Premier League clubs, with a bargain £17m asking price mooted.
The 3AM Verdict: Weinhandl looks a class act, and already has the physicality necessary to deal with the rough and tumble of the Premier League. He’d be a great investment for any of the sides mentioned, but they’d be best to sign him before sending him straight back to Sturm Graz on loan, as playing U21 football or sitting on the first team bench would do his development no good.
Spurs linked with bold free agent transfer raid
Last up, it’s back down to north London, where Spurs’ season has also got off to a fairly dire start. They’ve just been knocked out of the Carabao Cup, and are 17th in the league table with no wins and not a single goal scored. According to reports from Italy, via Sport Witness, the club are plotting a bold raid for free agent striker Mauro Icardi to solve their goal-scoring problem.
It’s claimed that the 33-year-old ex-Galatasaray striker has deemed Spurs a worthy “project” for a final career move, having already turned down several offers. It’s noted that while Tottenham would be unable to register the veteran forward until January, they are still “interested” and are now “evaluating” a potential raid for the player.
The 3AM Verdict: Traditionally, it’s not best practice to pour a can of petrol over an already raging fire. Signing Icardi would be an expensive risk that would likely not pay off. He’ll be as rusty as an old spanner come January, and the chances of him matching the 14 league goals he scored for Galatasaray last season with a similar total in the Premier League are slim to say the least.
