Tottenham fans have been quick to name Savinho alternatives as reports suggest that the Manchester City winger, a long-time Spurs target, is edging closer to signing a new contract at the Etihad.

Tottenham Hotspur were eager to strengthen their attacking depth out wide this summer, and Savinho, who is currently on the books of Manchester City, was identified early as a player who could bolster Thomas Frank’s options.

Interest from Tottenham dragged on until deadline day, but City refused to entertain any offers, standing firm on their stance that Savinho was not available for sale at any price.

Although Spurs walked away without securing the Brazilian, there were still whispers that the club could return for him in the coming months; however, those suggestions have now been shut down with the latest update.

Tottenham fans react as Manchester City winger Savinho nears new deal

Fabrizio Romano has now reported that Manchester City are pressing ahead with plans to tie Savinho down to a new long-term contract, which would see the winger commit his future at the Etihad.

For Tottenham supporters, the news has been received with frustration, with many heading to social media to share their views on the situation.

One fan wrote: “Put the money towards Minteh or Leo anyway!” while another added: “£80m for Semenyo release clause then??”

A third commented: “He just signed last summer meaning a new contract just means higher salary. It still will not be impossible to sign him unless City is giving him 200k per week. That being said if City want more than £70m for him then we are way better off looking at someone else for that price.”

A fourth fan said, “This was nailed on to happen, not sure why Spurs fans thought we were signing him. With this news we need to get behind Tel and hope Frank can give him a run of games on the left wing. Tel is a better player than Savinho in my opinion and he will show it with a chance.”

Another supporter reacted: “Was clear he was not that keen on the move as he never pushed, oh well, his loss sitting on the bench.”

A final fan summed up: “Maybe City know that Spurs are going to have investment to spend in January, and a new contract will bump up the price.”

Spurs must now weigh up Savinho alternatives

Manchester City were always looking for a fee in excess of £70m for Savinho and ultimately decided to keep him despite suggestions that Savio may have been open to joining Tottenham.

It remains early, with the January transfer window still some months away, but Spurs are already being linked with potential alternatives who would represent cheaper options.
