Tottenham have hit back at rival fans by releasing some comical official club merchandise.

Spurs ended a 17-year wait for a trophy when they beat Manchester United in the Europa League final in May, putting to bed a decade of rivalling jibes.

Fans of the North London club had been forced to weather countless jabs towards an ‘empty’ trophy cabinet, but success in Bilbao has finally allowed them to fire back.

Tottenham look to profit off classic insult

According to Roy Keane, Sir Alex Ferguson had once walked into the Manchester United dressing room before a match at home against Spurs and mentioned just three words.

“Lads, it’s Tottenham.”

That was all the United players needed, and the phrase has since morphed into a bat for rival fans to beat Spurs with.

MORE SPURS STORIES

With every huge match Spurs failed to turn up for, for every cup exit or league collapse – the words would re-emerge and attract seemingly non-stop laughter.

Man United apparently even went as far as to have t-shirts printed before the Europa League final, with the date, competition’s symbol and, of course, the phrase, adorning the front.

A photo posted to social media following full-time showed dozens of the shirts apparently prepared and hidden away.

But Tottenham enjoyed the last laugh when Brennan Johnson’s first-half strike saw his team to a 1-0 win, and the club have now gone one step further to rub the salt in.

From the official Spurs shop, fans can now purchase hoodies – for £55 – and t-shirts – for £30 – with “lads, it’s Tottenham” embroidered across the front.

In what appears to be a moment of genius from the club marketing staff, the North London club have managed to find a way to reclaim the jab, while profiting off of it as well.

Tottenham can continue reprisal by winning more

Spurs fans will be glad to be free of the trophy jokes, for now, but the true opportunity to switch their jabs back onto their rival-supporting mates will be when they can celebrate further trophies.

Despite being the man to end the trophy drought, Ange Postecoglou was sacked by Tottenham and replaced by Thomas Frank.

The Dane, while full of experience managing in the Premier League given his time at Brentford, is yet to lead a team to a major honour.
