Tottenham could tie up a deal to sign Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton by this weekend, according to reports in the Netherlands.

Spurs are looking to strengthen their squad ahead of the 2026/27 campaign, following back-to-back 17th-place finishes in the Premier League.

The Tottenham hierarchy are looking to invest in the squad to give new head coach Roberto De Zerbi the tools he needs to turn the ship around and bring success back to the white half of north London.

Two signings have already been completed, without Spurs pending a penny. Andy Robertson has joined from Liverpool on a free transfer, with Marcos Senesi doing the same from Bournemouth.

Another defender wanted by Tottenham this summer

And De Zerbi wants to bring in van Hecke, a third defender, to further improve a backline that has shipped more than a hundred goals across the last two seasons.

Van Hecke played under De Zerbi for two seasons at Brighton & Hove Albion, with Seagulls captain Lewis Dunk saying that the Dutchman showed the "biggest improvement I have seen in a player since the manager arrived".

De Zerbi knows and trusts van Hecke to play his brand of football and van Hecke also wants to make the move to Spurs to reunite with his former boss.

Dutch reporter Joost Blaauwhof tweeted last week: "It's Spurs and only Spurs. The Oranje international is awaiting agreement between Brighton & Hove Albion and Tottenham Hotspur, but is no longer speaking with any other club. Personal terms agreed."

And he has followed that up with his prediction that a transfer could be completed by this weekend.

When Jan Paul van Hecke transfer could be completed

He said on Friday: "The transfer of Jan Paul van Hecke is getting closer and closer. Possibly by Sunday. Brighton & Hove Albion wants to involve Luka Vuskovic in the deal and would value the Spurs defender at around £30million."

News emerged on Friday morning from the Athletic senior journalist David Ornstein that Brighton had made a bid of £30million to sign Vuskovic from Tottenham.

It is unclear as yet what Spurs' stance on selling Vuskovic is, having not yet played a single game for the club since arriving in 2025. He was sent out on loan to Hamburg this season, where he won the Bundesliga young player of the year award.

Vuskovic is contracted to Tottenham until 2030, with reports that Spurs are keen to hand him a more lucrative new deal to stay in north London.
