Newcastle United are into the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup after Aaron Ramsdale’s fine performance against Tottenham Hotspur.

Newcastle United are looking to win the Carabao Cup once again after the incredible victory over Liverpool last season.

Eddie Howe moved another step closer to achieving that goal on Wednesday night as Newcastle beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-0.

Fabian Schar and Nick Woltemade found the net to book Newcastle’s place against Fulham in the last eight.

Woltemade’s latest goal saw the German forward beat Tottenham goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky to Joe Willock’s cross.

Kinsky came off his line but flapped at Willock’s delivery, allowing Woltemade to nip in and score.

The Czech stopper was called upon for a rare start in place of first-choice stopper Guglielmo Vicario, but he did not look particularly comfortable throughout.

That was a stark contrast to Newcastle’s goalkeeping situation, as Aaron Ramsdale came in for Nick Pope.

Ramsdale was superb throughout and made two brilliant saves in the second half, denying Pape Matar Sarr and Richarlison.

Ramsdale may only be on loan at Newcastle from Southampton, but this really goes to show the value of having a backup goalkeeper with proven quality.

Kinsky joined Spurs from Slavia Prague in January, and he is ultimately still developing his game behind Vicario.

Conversely, Ramsdale is tried and tested at the top level and slotted right into the Newcastle side.

Switch Kinsky and Ramsdale around, and you may not have seen the same result on Wednesday, with Newcastle benefiting from having such a quality, experienced stopper between the sticks.

Aaron Ramsdale must take every chance to impress Newcastle United

Ramsdale already knows that he has Howe’s trust.

The pair worked together at Bournemouth, and Howe’s decision to reunite with Ramsdale summed up his thoughts on the goalkeeper.

That gives Ramsdale a great chance to secure a long-term Newcastle future anyway, especially with a permanent option in his loan move.

Ramsdale still needs to take every opportunity available, and playing a starring role in the Carabao Cup certainly helps his chances of staying at St James’ Park.
